US authorities are investigating if there was any criminal behaviour involving interactions between Open AI’s ChatGPT app and a man accused of killing two people and injuring six others in a shooting at Florida State University (FSU) last year.<\/p>\n

Florida Attorney-General James Uthmeier said prosecutors had carried out an initial review of chat logs between ChatGPT and the alleged gunman, Phoenix Ikner, to determine if the AI app aided or abetted the crime.<\/p>\n

“This criminal investigation will determine whether OpenAI bears criminal responsibility for ChatGPT’s actions in the shooting at Florida State University last year,” Mr Uthmeier said at a news conference in Tampa, on Tuesday, local time.<\/p>\n

Five people were hospitalised when the gunman rampaged through Florida State University, shooting at students.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Florida’s Office of Statewide Prosecution has subpoenaed OpenAI for records of its policies and training materials regarding threats to harm others, and for its policies on reporting “possible past, present, or future crime”, according to the attorney-general’s office.<\/p>\n

OpenAI spokeswoman Kate Waters called the FSU shooting a tragedy but said the company had no responsibility.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The company proactively shared information with law enforcement and continued to cooperate with investigators, she said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

“In this case, ChatGPT provided factual responses to questions with information that could be found broadly across public sources on the internet, and it did not encourage or promote illegal or harmful activity,” Ms Waters said in an email.<\/p>\n

Mr Ikner faces two counts of first-degree murder and several counts of attempted first-degree murder over the shooting at the university campus in Florida’s capital city.<\/p>\n

Investigators allege Mr Ikner, who is the stepson of a local sheriff’s deputy, used his stepmother’s former service weapon to carry out the shooting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prosecutors in the case say they intend to seek the death penalty.<\/p>\n
