It includes 40 original member companies. This list includes Stripe, Mastercard, Visa and Amazon Web Services. They plan to create a common standard for how artificial intelligence (AI) systems make or receive payments on behalf of their owner. When the firms that move most of the world’s money agree on a standard, it is no longer speculation.

AI agents can arrange travel, restock inventory, call a paid API or buy computing resources for individuals and businesses. The work is moving from recommending actions to executing them.“This exposes a gap in the architecture of the web, which has never had a native mechanism for one program to pay another,” Raj Parekh, head of stablecoins and payments at Monad Foundation, said in the launch announcement.

For nearly ten years, payment technology answered one question for business owners: what happened. Dashboards, analysis and reporting showed which transactions cleared, which disputes opened and which customers churned. You would read the data. You would do the work. That separation of responsibilities is now coming to an end. AI is making its way into the execution level of payments. The software no longer simply describes a reconciliation issue. Rather, the software can assist in resolving that issue.

Payment Dashboards Compared With AI Payment Agents

Source: Institute Of Business AI The Shift From Reading To Doing

Ecrypt is a California-based payment gateway and processing company. It was created by the combination of BankCard USA and Preferred Payments. They also announced a completely new product platform in May that includes an embedded Multi-Agent AI Assistant as part of their online user interface (dashboard). The AI assists users with reporting, merchant support and transaction questions inside the product itself, not adjacent to it.

“Focusing solely on streamlining transaction processing for many years, the next step is to help businesses be able to function at maximum efficiency,” stated Felix Danciu, Chief Financial Officer of Ecrypt, via email. “The purpose of using AI should go beyond simply pulling up data and displaying it on a dashboard. The goal of utilizing AI is to have the AI perform repetitive operational tasks, reduce the complexity and inefficiency of current workflow processes, freeing up time for teams to make decisions that are of greater value. This is when companies will start to realize tangible ROI from their investment in AI.

The design choice worth noticing is not the AI. It is the plural. Ecrypt built agents, not an agent, and that mirrors a shift happening across business software. As such it reflects a larger trend toward Multi-Agent Artificial Intelligence Systems being used in various Business Tools.

“We’re seeing a shift away from single AI assistants toward specialized, multi-agent systems because real business operations require different expertise across different workflows. One intelligent agent may excel at reporting, another at merchant support, another at payment operations. When those agents work together, organizations achieve greater accuracy, reliability, and operational efficiency than a single generalized assistant can provide,” Danciu said. I have reported on the risk side of this architecture before. When 1.3 billion AI agents arrive without kill switches, specialization multiplies the number of things that can act without asking. The same design produces agent sprawl when nobody owns the roster.

The Stakes Changed When Agents Touched Money

An agent that gives bad advice wastes your time. An agent that executes badly moves your money. That difference should change how every owner evaluates this category.

The change isn’t limited to payment processing. This month, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work. The agent integrates into emails, files and enterprise software. It could perform tasks for hours. Payment systems are developing the same future. Visa is growing its Intelligent Commerce pilot programs. Stripe has added a new layer of infrastructure called “agentic commerce” allowing an AI to make a purchase through more than a million Shopify merchants.

“Commerce will not run on a single agent, protocol, or payment method. The future will be built on interoperability. By supporting the x402 Foundation, Visa is helping advance an ecosystem where agents can transact securely across platforms, networks, and payment types,” Rubail Birwadker, senior vice president and head of growth products and partnerships at Visa, said in the launch announcement.

The cost model changed this month too. OpenAI moved ChatGPT Business agents to metered credits July 6, and Anthropic now bills agent workloads against credit pools that stop when exhausted. Each agent call now carries a defined dollar amount. An application running hot no longer consumes an abstraction. It consumes dollars you can track.

Danciu emphasized the importance of developing successful implementations of AI as opposed to simply developing advanced AI applications. According to Danciu, companies that develop the greatest value using AI are those who successfully implement AI into the daily work process to reduce friction in business processes and monitor results.

Three Rules Before Any Agent Touches Your Money

For the small business owners and SaaS product owners I work with, it comes down to three rules.

These are the rules that would apply to an agent (from a third party) whether it came from an AI powered payment platform, an AI vendor or was built by you.

Each agent gets one defined job and one human owner. An agent hired for transaction management and payment reconciliation should not be answering support tickets. You should be able to name the job and who owns the results. If not, you have sprawl, not staff. The same discipline applies to the agents a business can deploy in a week: each agent needs a job description.

Set limits in advance of your first use. Use spending limits, as well as scope and access to systems, as well as transaction limits. They are not optional settings. They are the difference between an assistant and an unsupervised signatory. Limits keep an automated process from executing transactions nobody approved.

Have people involved in every step of interaction with customers, or moving funds. All refunds, disputes, price changes and other interactions involving a customer require initial human approval. The technology earns more authority only after its error rate proves out.

Then measure the agent as you would measure an employee. Track hours of manual work removed and the response times. Also track error rates and credits consumed. Then compare that cost with the value returned. If the figures do not improve within a quarter, the agent is a cost. Costs get cut.

The payment networks spent last week agreeing on how software will spend money. Whether yours gets to is still the owner’s decision.

AI Agent Concept.
