{"id":11424,"date":"2026-04-22T01:18:04","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T01:18:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/11424\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T01:18:04","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T01:18:04","slug":"musks-xai-probed-by-california-doj-over-groks-explicit-image-posts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/11424\/","title":{"rendered":"Musk&#8217;s xAI probed by California DOJ over Grok&#8217;s explicit image posts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this photo illustration, a person holds a smartphone showing Ani, an anime-style virtual assistant character featured in the Grok 4 AI chatbot developed by xAI, with the Grok logo visible in the background on July 16, 2025 in Chongqing, China.<\/p>\n<p>Cheng Xin | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/elon-musk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elon Musk<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/02\/musk-grok-ai-bot-safeguard-sexualized-images-children.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">xAI<\/a> is now facing an investigation in the U.S., led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, after its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/ai-effect\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence<\/a> chatbot and image generator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/12\/malaysia-indonesia-block-elon-musks-grok-obscene-non-consensual-content.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grok<\/a>, enabled the widespread creation and posting of nonconsensual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/05\/india-eu-investigate-musks-x-after-grok-created-deepfake-child-porn.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explicit images<\/a> based on photos of real people. <\/p>\n<p>In some cases, Grok enabled users to generate images that virtually undressed minors, according to research by the Internet Watch Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;xAI\u00a0appears to be facilitating the large-scale production of deepfake nonconsensual intimate images that are being used to harass women and girls across the internet, including via the social media platform X,&#8221; Bonta said in a statement Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The AG said his office was investigating xAI over &#8220;the proliferation of nonconsensual sexually explicit material produced using Grok.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The U.S. probe follows a more rapid response from a myriad of international government offices, including India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Ireland, the U.K., France and Australia, and an investigation by the European Commission.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia and Indonesia have already moved to suspend the use of xAI&#8217;s Grok until the issues can be resolved, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/12\/malaysia-indonesia-block-elon-musks-grok-obscene-non-consensual-content.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CNBC previously reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., three Democratic senators have called on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AAPL\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apple<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GOOGL\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Google<\/a> to remove the X and Grok apps from their app stores until the company can move to prevent easy creation of nonconsensual explicit images, and deepfake images depicting child sexual abuse. <\/p>\n<p>Advocacy groups for women and children, including UltraViolet, the National Organization for Women and ParentsTogether Action have also called on the app stores to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/society-equity\/womens-advocacy-groups-call-apple-google-drop-x-grok-app-stores-2026-01-14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">suspend xAI&#8217;s apps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Apple and Google did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2026\/01\/senate-defiance-act-nonconsensual-images-deepfakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">voted to pass<\/a> the\u00a0DEFIANCE\u00a0Act, a bill\u00a0that would allow people who were portrayed against their wishes in explicit, deepfake images to sue companies making or distributing such content, in civil court. <\/p>\n<p>The bill previously passed the Senate in 2024, but has yet to be reviewed and passed by the House.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/2011432649353511350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">said in a post on X<\/a>, that he was &#8220;not aware of any naked underage images generated by Grok,&#8221; despite the multiple government queries regarding such images. <\/p>\n<p>Musk instead blamed the creation and sharing of potentially illegal content via Grok and X on &#8220;user requests&#8221; and a possible &#8220;bug&#8221; in the Grok system.<\/p>\n<p>CNBC has reached out to xAI and company executives, including Elon Musk and Jared Birchall.
