{"id":114393,"date":"2026-07-22T05:27:44","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T05:27:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/114393\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T05:27:44","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T05:27:44","slug":"us-and-china-reportedly-set-to-have-ai-talks-in-september","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/114393\/","title":{"rendered":"US and China reportedly set to have AI talks in September"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United States and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/china\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"232\">China<\/a> will reportedly hold talks over <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"1658\">artificial intelligence<\/a> in September to discuss the risks posed by their increasingly powerful frontier models and the tensions that have arisen as they compete for dominance in the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/op-eds\/4648723\/trump-china-threat-america-whatever-it-takes-win-ai-race\/\">AI race<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The dates have not yet been finalized, but the meeting is expected sometime before Chinese President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/xi-jinping\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"233\">Xi Jinping\u2019s <\/a>planned Sept. 24 <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/us-china-hold-ai-talks-september-sources-say-2026-07-21\/\">visit to the U.S.<\/a>, Reuters reported, citing multiple sources. It constitutes the first U.S.-China dialogue on AI under the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"4\">Donald Trump<\/a> and Xi previously discussed AI regulation at a summit in May, where they agreed to launch <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2026\/05\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-secures-historic-deals-with-china-delivering-for-american-workers-farmers-and-industry\/\">intergovernmental talks<\/a> on AI governance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is the first meeting, they\u2019re unlikely to solve any major problems. I think they will try to agree to some basic terms, like what defines a frontier AI model,\u201d DGA-Albright Stonebridge Group partner Paul Triolo told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discussion would be led on the U.S. side by Treasury Secretary <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/scott-bessent\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"11700\">Scott Bessent<\/a>, four of the sources said. Other details about the meeting were not yet reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/section\/news\/white-house\/\" type=\"category\" id=\"125\">White House<\/a> and U.S. Treasury did not respond to a Washington Examiner request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The AI race and security guardrails<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Beijing and Washington race to develop <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/op-eds\/4648723\/trump-china-threat-america-whatever-it-takes-win-ai-race\/\">AI<\/a>, both superpowers are working to establish regulations and shore up national security vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump administration, for instance, recently pressured <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/anthropic\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"17700\">Anthropic<\/a> to disable access to its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models worldwide in response to a hacking incident linked to China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/technology\/4653182\/china-ai-kimi-k3-anthropic-openai\/\">NEW CHINESE AI CHATBOT KIMI K3 RIVALS US LEADERS IN THE FIELD<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u2060Trump administration is in talks with U.S. AI companies about creating voluntary safety standards for the release of new AI models.
