The idea, he told WIRED recently, was to whittle down his options until he figured out what to do next.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The following March, Gelsinger <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.playground.vc\/people\/pat-gelsinger\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.playground.vc\/people\/pat-gelsinger&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.playground.vc\/people\/pat-gelsinger\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> that he had taken a position as general partner at Playground Capital, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ai-kill-venture-capital\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">venture capital<\/a> firm specializing in deep tech, taking bets on fledgling technologies built on new science.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Gelsinger took the role with the aim of helping a new generation of semiconductor startups reawaken <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/wired-explains-moores-law\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Moore\u2019s law<\/a>. Decades ago, Intel cofounder Gordon Moore predicted that the number of transistors on a chip would double roughly every two years, with a corresponding leap in performance. That held true for a long time, but as semiconductor firms <a href=\"https:\/\/cap.csail.mit.edu\/death-moores-law-what-it-means-and-what-might-fill-gap-going-forward\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">press the limits of physics<\/a>, further shrinking atomic-scale transistors has become prohibitively difficult and expensive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Gelsinger believes the best way to break that impasse is through advances in lithography\u2014etching chips using nanometer-scale beams of light. The <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.asml.com\/en\/products\/euv-lithography-systems\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.asml.com\/en\/products\/euv-lithography-systems&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asml.com\/en\/products\/euv-lithography-systems\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">leading lithography technology<\/a>, developed by the Dutch company ASML, lets chip manufacturers print using 13.5-nanometer wavelength light. The ability to cram in more, even smaller features, the logic goes, would unlock even more powerful processors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">When he joined Playground, Gelsinger took a board seat at xLight, a portfolio company developing novel lithography techniques that also recently <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/news-events\/news\/2026\/06\/department-commerce-announces-finalization-chips-incentives-xlight-support\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/news-events\/news\/2026\/06\/department-commerce-announces-finalization-chips-incentives-xlight-support&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/news-events\/news\/2026\/06\/department-commerce-announces-finalization-chips-incentives-xlight-support\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">received investment<\/a> from the US government. (When we spoke, Gelsinger repeatedly offered the phrase, \u201cGod said, \u2018Let there be light!\u2019\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As artificial intelligence <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/women-parental-leave-return-office-ai\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">upends the software industry<\/a>, more and more VC firms are <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.av.vc\/blog\/deep-tech-eats-venture-capital-two-years-after-we-called-it-the-data-is-in\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.av.vc\/blog\/deep-tech-eats-venture-capital-two-years-after-we-called-it-the-data-is-in&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.av.vc\/blog\/deep-tech-eats-venture-capital-two-years-after-we-called-it-the-data-is-in\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shifting toward deep tech<\/a>. But few, Gelsinger contends, are better equipped than he is to spot the winners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">WIRED met Gelsinger in early July at the RAISE Summit conference in Paris. We discussed his process for vetting deep tech founders, the US government\u2019s shifting stance on AI and semiconductors, and why breakthroughs in those fields necessarily come hand in hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">This conversation has been edited for length and clarity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">WIRED: Roughly four months separated your departure from Intel and arrival at Playground. What was going through your head during that period?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">PAT GELSINGER: My wife said, \u201cYou\u2019re not done yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">I was looking at government roles, university roles, CEO roles, private equity, venture. It was really a deductive process. I decided I didn\u2019t want to do [any more] public earnings calls. I didn\u2019t see myself as a politician. It came down to private equity or venture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">I want to do things that matter\u2014that if they succeed, make a difference\u2014with people I enjoy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Why did you decide against private equity?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Private equity writes bigger checks, but it\u2019s not as focused on the tech. At this phase of my career, do I want to write big checks and worry about financial returns, or do I want to do cool tech?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">We\u2019re at the edge of science, proving things out. That\u2019s always the kind of person I\u2019ve been. I love tech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A bunch of VCs are shifting toward deep tech in response to the disruption of the software industry by AI. What\u2019s your take on how AI is changing where the next investment opportunities appear?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The door has blown wide open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In 2024, the semiconductor industry aimed to hit a trillion dollars by 2030. Now, we\u2019ll hit a trillion dollars next year. I don\u2019t need my companies to win the market to get extraordinary returns. I just need them to win a decent percentage. That\u2019s what AI has done to deep tech venture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The good news is that a lot of venture firms are swinging in that direction.
