Elon Musk has outlined an ambitious goal for xAI’s artificial intelligence-powered video generation tool, Grok Imagine, saying it will create a full-length adaptation of Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ before the end of the year.<\/p>\n

The billionaire entrepreneur made the announcement while quote-sharing a post by X user Heavy Pulp, who shared a three-minute dialogue scene from Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ built on Grok Imagine. Responding to the post, Musk wrote: “Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.”<\/p>\n

The announcement comes as artificial intelligence is increasingly being used across different stages of filmmaking, from pre-production to post-production, while AI video-generation tools continue to add new capabilities.<\/p>\n

What is Grok Imagine?<\/p>\n

Developed by xAI, Grok is an artificial intelligence assistant capable of advanced reasoning, code generation, document processing and real-time web searching. It is integrated with X, enabling it to access live discussions and publicly available information on the platform.<\/p>\n

Its video-generation capabilities are powered by Grok Imagine, which allows users to generate short animated videos from text prompts or animate still images. Users can describe the scene they want, including camera movements such as panning or zooming, and Grok Imagine generates a matching video. It also supports image-to-video generation by animating uploaded still photographs or artwork.<\/p>\n

Grok Imagine can natively generate synchronised audio, including background music, ambient noise and sound effects. The tool currently supports video clips of up to 30 seconds. The three-minute dialogue scene shared by Heavy Pulp was built using Grok Imagine.<\/p>\n

How AI is being used in filmmaking today<\/p>\n

Artificial intelligence is already being used across several stages of filmmaking.<\/p>\n

Filmmakers use AI to generate storyboards, assist with scripts, create concept art and pre-visualise scenes before production begins. AI is also being used to produce hyper-realistic video scenes, synchronise lip movements and compose soundtracks.<\/p>\n

Major studios and independent creators are also using AI for visual effects (VFX), rotoscoping and environment generation, while a growing number of filmmakers are creating AI-assisted and AI-generated short films and feature films.<\/p>\n

Tools such as LTX Studio and Synthesia have expanded these capabilities further by allowing creators to generate production assets and AI-generated video content as part of structured production workflows.<\/p>\n

While a fully automated, studio-quality feature film is not quite here, filmmakers can already create continuous short films by generating assets, animating them and editing them together.<\/p>\n

Another tool is the AI video model from ByteDance called Seedance 2.0. It is positioned as a tool that can generate short cinematic videos from text or images, complete with synced audio. Its release has coincided with a rally in shares of several Chinese media and AI-linked firms. Seedance 2.0 uses what the company describes as a dual-branch diffusion transformer structure. In practice, that means the system produces video and sound together instead of layering them separately.<\/p>\n

Hollywood’s AI experiments<\/p>\n

Artificial intelligence is also becoming part of conversations around filmmaking in Hollywood. Director Steven Soderbergh has said he used what he described as generative AI to create “thematically surreal images” for an upcoming documentary about John Lennon and Yoko Ono. He has also said a planned film about the Spanish-American War will use “a lot of AI”. Speaking to Variety, Soderbergh said: “I don’t think it’s the solution to everything, and I don’t think it’s the death of everything. We’re in the very early stages.”<\/p>\n

Director James Cameron has also spoken about exploring how AI could be used in filmmaking while maintaining that generative AI, on its own and not ultimately controlled by visual effects artists, would have no place in the Avatar franchise. Cameron has also joined the board of Stability AI.<\/p>\n

At the same time, filmmakers including Guillermo del Toro and Steven Spielberg have publicly expressed reservations about the role of AI in filmmaking, highlighting the wider debate around how the technology should be used within the industry.<\/p>\n

From short clips to longer storytelling<\/p>\n

AI video-generation tools are now capable of generating videos from text prompts, animating still images and producing synchronised audio. They are also being used as part of broader filmmaking workflows that combine AI-generated assets with conventional production and editing techniques.<\/p>\n

Musk’s latest post points to a more ambitious goal for Grok Imagine: creating a full-length adaptation of ‘The Odyssey’. While the announcement does not include details on how such a project would be made, it comes at a time when AI is already being used across multiple stages of film production, and filmmakers are continuing to experiment with the technology’s creative and production capabilities.<\/p>\n
