As part of the deal, the chipmaker said Anthropic will deploy 2 gigawatts of its AMD Instinct MI450 Series graphics processing units, or GPUs, in AMD Helios rack<\/a>-scale solutions. The first gigawatt, a measure of power that’s become a common metric for describing AI data center capacity, will be deployed in the first half of next year, according to a release. <\/p>\n “We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Anthropic and deploy AMD Helios at gigawatt scale,” AMD CEO Lisa Su<\/a> said in a statement. <\/p>\n AMD has been one of the major beneficiaries of the AI boom because it’s one of the companies that makes the GPUs that can train models and run large workloads. It competes directly with Nvidia<\/a>, which dominates the market, but it has inked deals<\/a> with a number of high-profile players in the industry, including Anthropic’s rival OpenAI<\/a>.<\/p>\n As part of that arrangement, AMD issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock, equivalent to roughly 10% of the company, with vesting milestones tied to both deployment volume and AMD’s share price.<\/p>\n Anthropic’s agreement with AMD is the latest in a string of infrastructure deals the company has announced this year as it works to increase its computing capacity. The company said in April<\/a> that demand for its Claude<\/a> models and products has caused “inevitable strain” on its infrastructure,\u00a0which impacted “reliability and performance” for its users, especially during peak hours.<\/p>\n In May, Anthropic forged a deal with\u00a0Elon Musk<\/a>‘s\u00a0SpaceX<\/a>\u00a0to use all of the compute capacity at his company’s\u00a0Colossus 1 data center<\/a>\u00a0in Memphis, Tennessee. Anthropic\u00a0will\u00a0pay SpaceX $1.25 billion<\/a>\u00a0per month through May 2029 as part of that deal, according to\u00a0SpaceX’s\u00a0prospectus.<\/p>\n The company inked a multi-billion-dollar agreement with Amazon<\/a>, as well as a multi-gigawatt compute agreement<\/a> with Google<\/a> and Broadcom<\/a>, in April. Anthropic is also in preliminary talks to lease computing power from Meta<\/a>, as CNBC previously reported. <\/p>\n Anthropic has experienced explosive growth this year, partly because of the success of its popular AI coding assistant, Claude Code. It said in May that its run-rate revenue topped $47 billion<\/a>, up from the roughly $10 billion in revenue that it generated over the entirety of last year. <\/p>\n The company closed a funding round at a $965 billion<\/a> valuation that same month, and is gearing up for a potentially massive IPO that could land as soon as this year. Anthropic confidentially filed<\/a> its prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June, but has yet to disclose any additional plans.<\/p>\n
