So when reports surfaced on April 22 that the company is quietly testing whether to wall off Claude Code from its standard Claude Pro tier, the reaction in developer circles was swift and uncharitable. OpenAI employees wasted little time heading to X to pile on, pointing out that their own $20 ChatGPT Plus plan still bundles o1, o3, and advanced reasoning and coding capabilities without restriction. The optics, to put it mildly, are not great for Dario Amodei’s team.

What’s actually happening, as best anyone can tell, is an A/B test. New users signing up for Claude Pro are reportedly encountering a version of the plan that no longer includes Claude Code, Anthropic’s agentic coding tool capable of building, debugging, and refactoring software autonomously across multi-step loops. No formal announcement has come from Anthropic’s leadership, which itself tells a story , this is almost certainly a price elasticity probe before any permanent decision is made. The company wants to know how many prospective subscribers will balk, and how many will shrug and pay whatever a premium tier ends up costing, with industry chatter placing that figure somewhere between $30 and $50 per month.

There’s a straightforward operational logic here that’s worth taking seriously before dismissing this as pure greed. Agentic coding workflows are extraordinarily compute-intensive. When Claude Code tackles a non-trivial software task, it doesn’t fire off a single inference call , it runs iterative loops, revisits its own output, catches errors, and tries again. At scale, the inference costs for that kind of workload dwarf what’s required for a standard chat session. Offering unlimited access to that capability for $20 a month may simply be a money-losing proposition that Anthropic has decided it can no longer absorb as it pushes toward profitability.

That context doesn’t make the decision less painful for the developers who chose Claude Pro specifically because of its coding chops, but it does suggest this isn’t an arbitrary cash grab. It’s a signal that the economics of frontier AI are getting harder to paper over with flat subscription fees.

The broader industry reckoning

What Anthropic may be doing, whether intentionally or not, is firing a warning shot at the entire sector. Since late 2023, the dominant consumer AI pricing model has been a kind of buffet arrangement , pay one monthly fee, use everything. That model made sense when companies were racing to build user bases and market share mattered more than margins. The calculus is shifting. If Anthropic segments Claude Code into a higher tier and the user base absorbs it, expect others to watch carefully. The unbundling of AI capabilities by complexity and compute cost is a logical endpoint for an industry that has been quietly subsidizing heavy users since day one.

For individual developers and small startups, the concern is concrete. Subscription creep , where each genuinely useful capability lives one tier above what you’re currently paying for , is already a familiar frustration in SaaS. If AI coding assistants follow the same pattern, the productivity gains that made them attractive to resource-constrained teams start to erode under the weight of compounding monthly fees.

The fact that OpenAI staff are publicly mocking Anthropic rather than staying quiet also reveals something about where the competitive pressure is concentrated. Developers who write code are among the highest-value, most vocal users in the AI market. Losing that constituency, or even appearing to deprioritize them, is a meaningful reputational risk. Whether Anthropic’s leadership views the revenue upside as worth that risk is the real question the company is trying to answer with this test. Watch for a formal pricing announcement in the weeks ahead , and watch whether Claude Code usage metrics among existing subscribers start appearing in Anthropic’s communications as a way to justify whatever decision comes next.

Also read: Mozilla used Anthropic’s Mythos to find and fix 271 bugs in Firefox, signaling a new era for AI-driven software quality • OpenAI’s GPT Image 2 solves the text rendering problem and puts graphic designers on notice • SpaceX filing delivers a cold reality check for the orbital AI data center boom

Anthropic appears to be A/B testing the removal of Claude Code from its $20 monthly plan for new…

[8
179,9118,53,3154,182,2798,8168,157,9382
0":"post-11580","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-anthropic","8":"tag-agentic-ai","9":"tag-ai-pricing","10":"tag-anthropic","11":"tag-anthropic-claude","12":"tag-claude","13":"tag-claude-code","14":"tag-developer-tools","15":"tag-openai","16":"tag-subscription-model
["GET
