The latest workforce reduction affects parts of Amazon’s Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) organisation as the company continues expanding its investment in AI models and infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Amazon has eliminated an undisclosed number of roles within its Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) organisation, marking the latest targeted workforce reduction as the technology company sharpens its focus on priority AI initiatives.<\/p>\n
The company confirmed the layoffs on Wednesday but did not disclose the number of employees affected or identify the teams impacted within the AGI organisation.<\/p>\n
Amazon’s AGI organisation is responsible for developing the company’s advanced AI capabilities, including foundation models, silicon development and quantum computing initiatives. The unit leads Amazon’s long-term research into artificial general intelligence, which refers to AI systems capable of performing a broad range of tasks at or beyond human-level capability.<\/p>\n
The latest job cuts form part of Amazon’s broader workforce restructuring programme. According to CNBC, the company has eliminated more than 30,000 jobs since October 2022, following rapid recruitment during the COVID-19 pandemic. More recently, Amazon has shifted from large-scale layoffs to smaller, business-specific workforce reductions.<\/p>\n
The restructuring comes despite continued growth in the company’s AI investments. Amazon has projected capital expenditure of approximately $200 billion this year, representing an increase of more than 50 per cent compared with 2025. The company is also raising tens of billions of dollars in debt to fund the expansion of its AI infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Artificial intelligence remains central to Amazon’s long-term strategy. In 2024, the company introduced its Nova family of foundation models as it sought to strengthen its position against rivals including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.<\/p>\n
The AGI organisation has also undergone leadership changes over the past year. In December 2025, Amazon appointed Peter DeSantis, a longtime cloud executive, to lead the division, succeeding Rohit Prasad. Earlier this year, David Luan, who joined Amazon following its acquisition of AI start-up Adept, stepped down as head of the company’s AGI laboratory.<\/p>\n
Speaking to CNBC last month, DeSantis said Amazon’s AI models had not yet reached “the very frontier for the very largest, most demanding workloads” but added that the company continued to improve its capabilities with the aim of building industry-leading AI systems.<\/p>\n
The latest workforce reduction reflects a broader trend across the technology industry, where companies are restructuring teams and reallocating resources while increasing investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure and foundation models.<\/p>\n
