The chipmaker will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic as part of a strategic partnership that will see the AI company deploy up to two gigawatts of AMD’s Helios AI infrastructure, confirmed jointly by both companies..

The announcement lands just days after Microsoft said it would deploy the same Helios platform to power Azure AI workloads, making AMD’s case to hyperscalers and frontier labs alike in the space of a single week.

The Anthropic deployment combines Instinct MI450 Series GPUs, Epyc Venice CPUs and Pensando networking, with the first gigawatt expected to go live in the first half of 2027.

Lisa Su, chair and chief executive of AMD, says the company is “thrilled to deepen our partnership with Anthropic and deploy AMD Helios at gigawatt scale,” adding that the collaboration establishes Helios as a major platform for the next generation of AI infrastructure.

Tom Brown, Anthropic’s co-founder and chief compute officer, notes access to compute is central to keeping Claude at the frontier and meeting customer demand. Su later posted on X that she was thrilled Helios would help power Claude at gigawatt scale, thanking Brown and Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei directly.

Unlike AMD’s arrangements with OpenAI and Meta, which included warrants for up to 160 million shares each, Anthropic’s stake carries no warrants, only a capped cash investment.

Two wins in one week

Earlier in the week, Microsoft announced it would deploy AMD’s Helios platform to power Azure AI services and internal inference workloads, making it one of the first hyperscalers to adopt the company’s next-generation rack-scale AI system.

Landing both Microsoft and Anthropic before Helios has even reached general commercial availability, expected in the second half of 2026, gives AMD two marquee validators in quick succession.

It also builds on a broader run for AMD this year, which has already signed large-scale chip supply agreements with OpenAI and Meta. Tech Funding News has tracked how Anthropic itself has spent 2026 diversifying aggressively away from single-supplier dependence, from its Tensor Processing Unit and infrastructure build-out involving Google, Broadcom and new hires like Monzo co-founder Tom Blomfield, to parallel talks to lease up to $10 billion of compute from Meta, to the $65 billion Series H that valued the company at $965 billion in June, overtaking OpenAI, with strategic backing already in place from Nvidia and Microsoft as far back as February’s $350 billion round.

Can AMD finally loosen NVIDIA’s grip?

Nvidia remains the dominant force in AI accelerators, and its own participation as a strategic backer in Anthropic’s February funding round shows it isn’t sitting out the diversification trend either.

But AMD landing Microsoft and Anthropic in the same week, on the same unreleased platform, is the clearest sign yet that Helios is being taken seriously by two of the industry’s most demanding compute buyers before it has even shipped commercially.

Whether that translates into meaningful, lasting market share against Nvidia remains an open question. But for a chipmaker that has spent years chasing this kind of validation, having Microsoft and Anthropic both sign on to Helios within days of each other is the strongest proof point AMD has had yet.

AMD will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, with the capital released as the AI company hits…

[8
24,53,3946,66,18484,12990,156
post-116468","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-anthropic","tag-ai","tag-anthropic","tag-funding","tag-news","tag-top-funding-rounds","tag-unicorns","tag-us
["GET
