(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbrc.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WBRC<\/a>) &#8211; Sen. Tommy Tuberville said artificial intelligence is already present in American schools and that Alabama students should be taught how it works, why it matters, and how to use it responsibly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Tuberville, the Republican candidate for Alabama governor, said some Alabama schools have already opted into AI training programs.<\/p>\n<p>Federal push for AI literacy<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Last year, President Trump signed an executive order making AI literacy an official priority in K-12 schools. The U.S. Department of Education followed by directing schools on how to use federal dollars to implement AI education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got to teach our kids in the classroom because they\u2019re going to learn it regardless,\u201d Tuberville said. \u201cWe want Alabama students to be the best and the brightest in the country; training them on AI is the least we can do to prepare them for the ever-changing technology landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What it looks like in the classroom<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Educators are currently encouraged to teach students how to use AI responsibly, ethically, and with academic integrity. Tuberville said teacher training is a key component of the effort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe want to train our teachers, and then we want to start teaching at our schools at a young age,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>AI will not replace teachers<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Lawmakers and educators agree that AI should not replace teachers, saying the technology is only as good as the teachers guiding it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe want to make sure that our students can tell what\u2019s fake and what\u2019s real. That\u2019s what learning through these programs and starting at a young age does,\u201d Tuberville said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">He also cautioned that foundational knowledge must come first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cBut you have to remember this, learn the basics first, learn the ethics first, because it could be used the wrong way,\u201d Tuberville said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">How AI will be used in Alabama classrooms is still taking shape as the technology continues to evolve.
