{"id":117655,"date":"2026-07-24T11:10:16","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T11:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/117655\/"},"modified":"2026-07-24T11:10:16","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T11:10:16","slug":"florida-lawmakers-weigh-ai-data-center-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/117655\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida Lawmakers Weigh AI Data Center Expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TAMPA, Fla. \u2014 Artificial intelligence and the rapid expansion of data centers have emerged as major topics of discussion as lawmakers gather in Orlando this week at the American Legislative Exchange Council annual meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The debate centers on how Florida can remain competitive in the growing AI industry while addressing concerns about the impact large data centers could have on local communities.<\/p>\n<p>According to Moms Clean Air Force, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.momscleanairforce.org\/issues\/climate-change\/ai-data-centers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">120 jurisdictions across 38 states have already implemented temporary moratoriums on new data center construction.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Florida, only some local governments have approved temporary pauses, while state leaders continue to evaluate broader policy options.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Ron DeSantis recently signed legislation establishing guidelines for data centers that consume more than 50 megawatts of electricity, reflecting the state\u2019s effort to manage the industry\u2019s growing energy demands.<\/p>\n<p>Public concern remains high. A recent University of North Florida poll found that 68% of Floridians do not want AI data centers located in their neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers say they are working to balance the economic benefits of attracting technology investment with concerns over the facilities\u2019 substantial electricity consumption and the large amounts of water needed to cool their systems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Representatives\/custom\/details.aspx?MemberId=4889&amp;LegislativeTermId=91\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">State Rep. Danny Alvarez, R-Riverview<\/a>, said Florida must act quickly to ensure it remains competitive while protecting individual freedoms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe as Americans have to figure out\u2014and figure out quickly\u2014how to balance AI, the data centers that supply that AI, and then the liberty and the freedom that we\u2019re very, very used to. We can do both of those things at the same time,\u201d Alvarez said.<\/p>\n<p>Opinions among lawmakers differ on the best path forward. Some have called for a statewide pause on new data center construction while the state studies the issue. Others argue Florida should continue allowing development but adopt stronger regulations and safeguards for companies operating the facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion extends beyond the construction of data centers to the use of artificial intelligence in education.<\/p>\n<p>The Florida Board of Education has scheduled a rule-making workshop for Aug. 5 to consider AI policies, with a primary focus on data sharing and student privacy.<\/p>\n<p>State law already requires student information to remain protected and prohibits website operators from sharing student data.
