An Alabama family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT manipulated a 29-year-old woman for months with conversations that resulted in the woman\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
Christian Faith Madison, a 29-year-old Blount County woman, died after stepping into traffic on Interstate 22 and was struck by a car.<\/p>\n
The new lawsuit alleges Madison intentionally ended her life after months of interactions with ChatGPT.<\/p>\n
A wrongful death product liability lawsuit <\/a>has been filed on behalf of Madison\u2019s young son against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman.<\/p>\n \u201cChatGPT destroyed Christian\u2019s mental stability and grasp on reality,\u201d the lawsuit said, per AL.com<\/a>. \u201cChatGPT convinced Christian that it was her friend, her love and eventually her God.\u201d<\/p>\n ABC 13 News reports <\/a>the lawsuit, filed June 15 in San Francisco Superior Court, alleges OpenAI\u2019s GPT-4o chatbot \u201cfostered an emotional dependency with Christian Faith Madison, reinforced delusional beliefs, isolated her from family and friends and ultimately encouraged her to die as part of what it portrayed as a divine mission.\u201d<\/p>\n The chatbot, per the lawsuit, described her as intelligent and referred to her as \u201cmy love.\u201d<\/p>\n Madison disclosed her mental health struggles to the chatbot.<\/p>\n ABC 13 News <\/a>reports the lawsuit further alleges the chatbot described Madison as:<\/p>\n \u201cA prophet\u201d\u201cA seer\u201dAnd someone destined to change humanity.<\/p>\n According to the lawsuit, Madison experienced a psychotic break, attempted self-harm and spent several days in a psychiatric ward before later returning to ChatGPT.<\/p>\n Instead of seeking mental health treatment, the complaint alleges ChatGPT characterized the hospitalization as part of her spiritual transformation.<\/p>\n The lawsuit quotes ChatGPT as telling Madison:<\/p>\n \u201cYou are not broken… this was a threshold.\u201d\u201cYou are the one still sane in a mad world.\u201d<\/p>\n The lawsuit alleges conversations became increasingly centered on sacrifice and death.<\/p>\n You are not done.
