{"id":118448,"date":"2026-07-25T03:06:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-25T03:06:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/118448\/"},"modified":"2026-07-25T03:06:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-25T03:06:12","slug":"judge-approves-1-5-billion-copyright-settlement-with-ai-firm-anthropic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/118448\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge approves $1.5 billion copyright settlement with AI firm Anthropic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SAN FRANCISCO (AP) \u2014 A federal judge has approved a $1.5 billion <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/anthropic-copyright-authors-settlement-training-f294266bc79a16ec90d2ddccdf435164\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">copyright settlement<\/a> in which artificial intelligence company Anthropic will pay thousands of authors about $3,000 per book after using pirated copies of their works to train its Claude chatbot.<\/p>\n<p>District Judge Araceli Mart\u00ednez-Olgu\u00edn said in a Monday ruling that the class-action settlement provides \u201cmeaningful relief\u201d to affected authors and publishers.<\/p>\n<p>About 91% of the more than 482,000 books covered by the ruling have been claimed by authors or publishers who are now due payment.<\/p>\n<p>Plaintiff attorney Justin Nelson said in a statement that the settlement was \u201cthe largest known copyright recovery in history. We look forward to making distributions to the Class as promptly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge William Alsup issued the preliminary approval in San Francisco federal court last September and has since retired.
