{"id":118542,"date":"2026-07-25T07:01:13","date_gmt":"2026-07-25T07:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/118542\/"},"modified":"2026-07-25T07:01:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-25T07:01:13","slug":"doe-looks-to-ai-to-advance-next-generation-of-quantum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/118542\/","title":{"rendered":"DOE Looks to AI to Advance Next Generation of Quantum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Experts explain how the Genesis Mission will merge AI and quantum to further scientific discovery and research.<\/p>\n<p>The Energy Department\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/science\/articles\/energy-department-announces-initiative-create-and-deploy-worlds-first\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Quantum Genesis initiative<\/a> aims to bring artificial intelligence and quantum computing together to accelerate scientific discovery, a combination national security researchers say could help overcome some of the biggest barriers to quantum computing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my mind, the Genesis Mission first and foremost will help us get to performant quantum computers. You\u2019re always going to have a classical computer controlling a quantum computer,\u201d Sandia National Lab Computing Research Center Director Jennifer Gaudioso told GovCIO Media &amp; Research. \u201cWith the high-performance computing and AI tools that Genesis is bringing, we will have more effective controls to integrate AI and quantum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the context of today\u2019s supercomputers, Gaudioso said <a href=\"https:\/\/govciomedia.com\/category\/quantum\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quantum computing<\/a> will become another tool in the broader ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really think we\u2019re headed to a heterogeneous computing future,\u201d Gaudioso said. \u201cSome problems will be best solved on a data flow accelerator with an AI backbone. \u2026 A quantum computer will do something that nothing else can do for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AI\u2019s Impact on Quantum<\/p>\n<p>The new initiative stems from the department\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/govciomedia.com\/genesis-mission-spurs-new-government-industry-partnership-model\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">broader Genesis Mission<\/a> that aims to integrate the agency\u2019s 17 national laboratories and supercomputers into a single unified AI platform. Quantum Genesis aims to develop and deploy the world\u2019s first fault-tolerant quantum computing capability by 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Gaudioso said researchers are only beginning to understand how <a href=\"https:\/\/govciomedia.com\/quantum-could-replicate-ais-breakout-moment-across-government-officials-say\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI and quantum<\/a> reinforce each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis work of thinking about how AI and quantum can be used together is just getting started. We\u2019re at the point where it seems real, and that wasn\u2019t the case in the past five or 10 years,\u201d said Gaudioso.<\/p>\n<p>Why Quantum Matters<\/p>\n<p>Gaudioso discussed how she sees quantum computing solving problems beyond today\u2019s supercomputers in areas such as materials science, <a href=\"https:\/\/govciomedia.com\/quantumct-builds-a-quantum-ecosystem-for-drug-development\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drug discovery<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/govciomedia.com\/agencies-advance-quantum-use-cases-to-maintain-competitive-advantage\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">national security<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAtoms and molecules are inherently quantum mechanical, and those are the first problems where we believe we will see quantum advantage. They\u2019re super hard. We can only approximate them on classical computers, and we believe those are the areas where we\u2019re going to see real advantage emerge from quantum computing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>As a nuclear weapons laboratory, Sandia could enhance its ability to model materials used in nuclear deterrence programs by developing more <a href=\"https:\/\/govciomedia.com\/idaho-national-labs-ai-applications-in-nuclear-technology\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accurate simulations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can do much better simulations if we can understand those materials from a quantum perspective with a quantum computer,\u201d she said. \u201cWe also expect quantum computers to be really good at complex scheduling, optimization, resource allocation, and there\u2019s obviously lots of optimization and resource allocation from a national security space where that would be really helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Progress Hinges on Error Correction<\/p>\n<p>The need for a fault-tolerant computer hinges on the fact that quantum computers require a large number of qubits. The more qubits in a system, the more powerful and noisier the system. This increase in noise leads to errors in calculations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just about more qubits anymore,\u201d Gaudioso said. \u201cIt\u2019s also about better control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said breakthroughs over the past several years have increased the number of operations quantum computers can perform before errors occur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of cycles you can run, the longer the computer program you can run on a quantum computer, is growing and is rapidly approaching the useful range,\u201d she said. \u201cThat work in the last couple of years has really changed the timelines for quantum computing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gaudioso said reaching that milestone will require more than advances in hardware. It will depend on collaboration across DOE\u2019s laboratories, universities and industry to mature quantum technologies and integrate them into existing infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>She said Sandia\u2019s role is to make emerging quantum technologies \u201cmore useful, reliable, secure and mission relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe labs have a lot of deep knowledge, but industry has lots of advantages too.
