The world\u2019s only trillionaire \u2014 who claims to love the Homeric epics \u2014 is so incensed that he is now promising to create an entirely AI-generated, \u201chistorically accurate,\u201d adaptation of The Odyssey.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cBefore this year ends, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/grok\/\" id=\"auto-tag_grok\" data-tag=\"grok\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grok<\/a> Imagine will make a full-length movie of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-odyssey\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-odyssey\" data-tag=\"the-odyssey\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Odyssey<\/a> that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer,\u201d Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/2079758604656316619\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> Tuesday night on his social media platform, X. He\u2019s so proud of the idea that, as of this afternoon, the post is pinned to the top of his page.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn a reply to another user\u2019s post, Musk also indicated that he is \u201cdown\u201d to give Mel Gibson \u2014 a bonafide Greek, apparently \u2014 $100 million to film an adaptation of The Odyssey that was \u201cpainstakingly historically accurate ships, armour, weapons, and casting, with all dialogue taken straight from the original poem and delivered in Homeric Greek.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFor context, the film released by Nolan had a production budget of $250 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMusk shared a three-minute sample clip of what his Grok AI Odyssey might look like, one produced by another user on X. The teaser depicts a scene between Odysseus and the nymph Calypso. If whatever product Musk plans to produce is supposed to be \u201ctrue to the art\u201d of Homer, it\u2019s not looking very promising.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAs is typically the case with AI slop, it\u2019s a hodgepodge of stereotypes and stilted dialogue. The armor worn by Odyssesus looks about as realistic as a \u201cRoman soldier\u201d halloween costume. The \u201csirens\u201d are statuesque women draped in canary yellow maxi dresses that scream budget bridesmaid. Odysseus is literally wearing foam earplugs to block out their song. The shadow of Hermes is depicted with giant, dovelike wings in the style of a biblical angel. Calypso is a strawberry blond, green-eyed dime with lip filler and a case of Instagram face. The characters deliver lines like emoting Sims.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMonths ago, when news broke that Nolan had cast Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong\u2019o and Oscar nominee Elliot Page to play minor parts in his Odyssey, Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/political-commentary\/odyssey-lupita-nyongo-helen-of-troy-elon-musk-racist-1235563178\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raged<\/a> that the acclaimed film director was \u201cpissing on Homer\u2019s grave.\u201d It\u2019s unlikely that the blind poet \u2014 who may or may not have even existed \u2014 was a committed white nationalist who shared Musk and his ilk\u2019s obsession with European beauty standards developed three millennia after his time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut what could be more disrespectful to the Homeric works Musk claims to love than stripping them of humanism that has made them immortal. Musk\u2019s ideal Odyssey is one rendered entirely in the hallucination of a computer that, like him, is unable to comprehend the very story it is telling, without the intimacy of human art and labor.
