Amazon on Wednesday cut jobs in \u200cits artificial general intelligence group, marking the latest \u200bin a series of smaller \u2060reductions across the company since a much larger one in January.<\/p>\n

Artificial general intelligence is a hypothetical \u200cAI system that surpasses human intelligence and can learn, grow and operate autonomously. Many \u200cof the top AI companies are \u200cworking to \u2060develop similar systems, with the \u2060hope of deploying them to solve difficult problems.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been building large AI models for several years, and it remains \u200bone of the \u200cmost important things we\u2019re working on,\u201d said an Amazon spokesman<\/a> following a Reuters inquiry. \u201cWe\u2019re sharpening our focus on the initiatives that matter \u200cmost for customers, so we can move \u200bfaster on what counts. That focus means some difficult decisions, including eliminating some \u2060roles within parts of our AGI organization.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rohit Prasad, a top Amazon executive overseeing AGI, left \u200cthe company at the end of last year and the head of its AGI Lab, David Luan, left in February. AGI work was consolidated under senior vice president Peter DeSantis in December as part of a larger \u200cgroup that also includes silicon development and quantum computing.<\/p>\n

Employees \u200bunder Adeeb Shanaa, vice president of artificial general intelligence data services, and \u2060Vishal Sharma, vice president of AGI information, reported being \u2060impacted by the cuts on online forums on Wednesday. However, the full scope \u200cof the cuts could not immediately be learned.<\/p>\n

Amazon cut 16,000 jobs across the \u200bcompany in January.<\/p>\n
