July 26 (Reuters) – Nvidia<\/a> is in talks to provide roughly $250 billion in financing guarantees for OpenAI as part of a massive data center project, the \u200cWall Street Journal reported on Sunday. <\/p>\n

The backstop from Nvidia would help the \u200cChatGPT maker lease a 10-gigawatt project that SoftBank’s energy subsidiary is developing in southern Ohio, the newspaper said, \u200bciting people familiar with the matter. <\/p>\n

For OpenAI, a deal would be the first step toward controlling its own infrastructure instead of renting it from Microsoft<\/a>, Amazon and Oracle, while for Nvidia, it would guarantee demand for its chips for years to come. <\/p>\n

The project is expected \u200cto cost more than $500 billion \u2060in total, including the chips inside the data center, according to the WSJ. <\/p>\n

The $250 billion guarantee covers the data center lease and debt \u2060financing, but would not cover the Nvidia chips inside the center, the WSJ said, adding that the chipmaker was also discussing financing OpenAI’s chip purchases worth up to $350 billion. <\/p>\n

Nvidia’s backing would \u200bsupport financing \u200bvehicles aimed at reassuring lenders about the \u200bproject’s funding, the report added. <\/p>\n

The first \u200cphase of the project is expected to be finished in 2028, with around 800 megawatts of power, the Journal said. <\/p>\n

The power is controlled by the U.S. government and funded separately by Japan under a recent trade deal, tied to Tokyo’s pledge to invest $33 billion in a natural gas plant. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is involved in deciding who \u200cgets access, according to the report. <\/p>\n

Reuters could not \u200bimmediately verify the report. Nvidia, OpenAI and the U.S. \u200bCommerce Department did not respond \u200bto requests for comment outside regular business hours. <\/p>\n

OpenAI, in advanced talks for \u200cseveral weeks to lease the site, \u200bis among the companies \u200bshowing the strongest interest in the project, while Anthropic, Microsoft and Google have also spoken to Lutnick in recent weeks, the report said. <\/p>\n

The deal underscores a \u200bbroader shift as tech giants \u200cincreasingly tap debt and equity markets to fund AI infrastructure, with spending set \u200bto top $700 billion this year. <\/p>\n
