LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) – A committee of lawyers has recommended that an Omaha attorney accused of using AI to write a state Supreme Court brief should be temporarily suspended from practicing law.<\/p>\n
The Nebraska Council for Discipline is recommending the temporary suspension of attorney Greg Lake\u2019s law license after a divorce case he argued before the Nebraska Supreme Court<\/a> in February.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd your brief had a number of errors in it that were submitted,\u201d a justice said. \u201cCan you explain to us how that occurred?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAbsolutely, Your Honor. I was on my 10th wedding anniversary. While flying down there, my computer broke. And I uploaded the incorrect version of my brief,\u201d Lake said.<\/p>\n Attorney denied AI use during Supreme Court hearing<\/p>\n The opposing attorney told the court that of the 63 references Greg Lake made in his brief, 57 contained some form of problem.<\/p>\n \u201cThe brief that was submitted had misquotes from cases, fictitious cases, and misquotes from statutes. How were those all generated in your, I guess, the version that you did submit to us?\u201d a justice asked.<\/p>\n \u201cSure. It was a draft. And when I…My writing process is when I\u2019m drafting, I stick in things that I know wouldn\u2019t pass muster,\u201d Lake said.<\/p>\n \u201cThe elephant in the room is whether or not you used artificial intelligence. Did you?\u201d the justice asked.<\/p>\n \u201cNo, I did not,\u201d Lake said.<\/p>\n Lake repeatedly denied to the Nebraska Supreme Court justices that he used AI. The justices dismissed the divorce appeal last month, saying his \u201cassertion that he simply filed the wrong draft…lacks credibility.\u201d<\/p>\n Client faces mounting legal bills<\/p>\n Lake now has a week to file a response to the potential punishment before the Nebraska Supreme Court issues the final ruling.<\/p>\n Lake\u2019s client in the divorce case is Jason Regan. Regan said he just received a bill from the opposing counsel for $17,000, due by Friday, and owes another $35,000 for his ex\u2019s legal fees.<\/p>\n He said he is exhausted and frustrated with the legal system as he fights to remain in his daughter\u2019s life and isn\u2019t sure if he has the stomach or finances to hire a malpractice attorney for another legal fight.<\/p>\n \u2014<\/p>\n Watch breaking news unfold on our livestream.
