It is that Chinese companies are increasingly providing capable intelligence at a price the global market can afford.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">AI is fast becoming everyday infrastructure. It is metered by usage and embedded in businesses, public services and devices, much like electricity or cloud computing. In an infrastructure market, leadership depends on affordability, reliability and reach as much as peak performance.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The AI race is therefore becoming a contest for market share. On OpenRouter, Chinese models processed 4.12 trillion tokens in the second week of February, compared with 2.94 trillion for American models. By June, they were handling about 18 trillion tokens a week, more than three times the American total on the platform. OpenRouter is not the whole market, but it reveals an important shift: as capabilities converge, cost determines adoption. Adoption determines which ecosystems become global defaults.<\/p>\n<p>Four-fifths of the world\u2019s population lives outside China and the United States. Much of the next wave of AI adoption will occur in Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. Governments, telecoms operators, universities and start-ups in these regions do not always need the model with the highest benchmark score. They <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/policy\/article\/3361057\/china-ai-summit-hears-global-south-needs-equal-access-avoid-digital-divide?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">need models<\/a> that are capable, affordable, adaptable to local languages and deployable on local infrastructure. This is where Chinese models are becoming competitive.Chinese open-weight models accounted for 41 per cent of downloads on Hugging Face in the year to February 2026, compared with 36.5 per cent for American models. Alibaba\u2019s Qwen has reached around <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/big-tech\/article\/3349552\/alibabas-qwen-family-captures-over-50-global-open-source-downloads-report-finds?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">1 billion cumulative downloads<\/a>. Singapore and Malaysia have also built AI initiatives on Chinese open-weight foundations.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Downloads are not deployments, but they indicate developer interest and future ecosystem formation. Each deployment produces local applications, engineering feedback and developers familiar with a technical stack. Market share is, therefore, not merely the reward for technological leadership.
