The institutional framework behind the system that won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for cracking the problem of predicting three-dimensional protein structures is being systematically dismantled. This restructuring officially marks DeepMind’s farewell to an era defined by a strategy centered on “conquering single, grand scientific challenges,” pivoting fully to a new narrative of building general artificial intelligence and agents around its Gemini large language model.

According to the Financial Times’ tracking of recent personnel moves and sources familiar with the matter, most authors of the original AlphaFold paper have been reassigned to other teams over the past year. Among the full-time authors still at DeepMind, nearly a quarter have left the company entirely. Those who remain have been integrated into projects built around Google’s Gemini large language model, or new directions such as enzyme design, nuclear fusion, and genomics; another portion has been transferred to Alphabet’s drug discovery subsidiary, Isomorphic Labs.

DeepMind Research Vice President Pushmeet Kohli bluntly revealed the nature of this restructuring. He founded and leads DeepMind’s “AI for Science” team and had previously formulated a nine-year strategy: focus on grand scientific challenges, with each project organized around a clearly defined goal. Kohli now indicates that this strategy has undergone a fundamental change. DeepMind is no longer deploying its forces solely around single scientific problems like protein folding, but is shifting its focus to building “Gemini-powered systems that can assist scientists in conducting research and ultimately automate parts of the scientific research process.” Simultaneously, DeepMind is fiercely competing with OpenAI and Anthropic for the high ground in cutting-edge AI agents.

The most glaring talent exodus has occurred at the core level. Earlier this year, research engineer John Jumper, who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contributions to AlphaFold, was transferred alongside fellow AlphaFold researcher Jonas Adler to a newly formed internal Google team called “Code Strike.” The team’s mission is to enhance the company’s AI coding capabilities to catch up with rivals Anthropic and OpenAI. However, this move failed to retain top talent. Last month, Jumper announced his departure for Anthropic, with Adler and another AlphaFold colleague, Alexander Pritzel, following suit. An anonymous DeepMind employee described the trio to the Financial Times as “key, important, core members,” noting that their collective departure caused considerable shockwaves within the company.

The AlphaFold story began in 2018. Using artificial intelligence to predict the three-dimensional structures of proteins, it fundamentally rewrote the path of biological research and paved the way for the creation of Isomorphic Labs. This breakthrough ultimately sent DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis and Jumper to the podium to receive the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Faced with questions about the team’s dissolution and talent drain, DeepMind, in its response, still expressed pride in its scientific heritage and AlphaFold’s global impact. The company stated that the movement of researchers reflects the evolution of its scientific priorities. Yet, between the lines, the lab that once prided itself on “conquering single grand challenges” has now redeployed its brightest minds to feed general-purpose large models and agents. A Nobel Prize-caliber legacy is being transitioned from an independent kingdom of dedicated problem-solving to make way for a grander narrative of artificial general intelligence.

Google’s elite AI lab DeepMind has quietly disbanded its star team AlphaFold.
