If completed, the project would provide OpenAI with access to a 10GW computing campus capable of supporting the next generation of AI models.<\/p>\n<p>The development also underscores how AI leaders are increasingly relying on unconventional financing structures that combine technology companies, investors and governments to fund the enormous capital requirements of hyperscale infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia&#8217;s Financial Baking Strengthens OpenAI&#8217;s Bid<\/p>\n<p>According to reports from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/27\/technology\/openai-data-center-nvidia.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times<\/a>, Nvidia is in discussions to provide a financial guarantee of up to US$250 billion that would allow OpenAI to raise debt using the chipmaker&#8217;s credit profile. The proposed backstop would cover lease obligations and construction-related debt if OpenAI were unable to meet its financial commitments.<\/p>\n<p>The negotiations remain ongoing and are subject to change. Nvidia declined to comment publicly on the discussions.<\/p>\n<p>The data center campus is being developed by SoftBank and SB Energy in partnership with the US. Department of Energy on the site of a former uranium enrichment facility in Pike County, Ohio. The project is expected to receive 10GW of electrical capacity, enough to support AI infrastructure on an unprecedented scale.<\/p>\n<p>The US government is also playing a strategic role through its partnership with Japan, which is helping finance the project as part of a broader trade agreement tied to infrastructure investment. US Commerce Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/nvidia-talks-with-openai-guarantee-250-billion-financing-data-center-wsj-reports-2026-07-26\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Howard Lutnick must approve the final arrangement<\/a> before the lease can be completed.<\/p>\n<p>Although Microsoft, Google, and other technology companies have reportedly submitted proposals to use the campus, OpenAI has emerged as the leading candidate. Nvidia&#8217;s willingness to provide financial support has strengthened the company&#8217;s position, according to people familiar with the negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Construction remains in its early stages, with the first phase currently expected to be completed in 2028.<\/p>\n<p>AI Infrastructure New Financing Era<\/p>\n<p>The proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/27\/nvidia-and-openai-in-talks-for-up-to-250-billion-dollar-ai-backstop.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ohio campus<\/a> illustrates how the economics of AI infrastructure continue to evolve as developers pursue increasingly sophisticated financing models to secure computing capacity. Rather than relying solely on equity investment, AI companies are combining strategic investments, cloud agreements, hardware purchases, and debt guarantees to fund projects that would otherwise exceed their financial capacity.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI has previously followed this approach through its <a href=\"https:\/\/mexicobusiness.news\/tech\/news\/microsoft-openai-end-exclusivity-deal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">relationship with Microsoft<\/a>, which invested more than US$13 billion between 2019 and 2023. Much of that capital ultimately flowed back to Microsoft through purchases of cloud computing services needed to train and operate OpenAI&#8217;s models.<\/p>\n<p>Similar arrangements have become increasingly common across the industry. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/amd-invest-up-5-billion-anthropic-wsj-reports-2026-07-22\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthropic recently announced a US$5 billion investment from AMD<\/a> while committing to purchase tens of billions of dollars in hardware from the semiconductor company. Google and Amazon have also combined investments with cloud infrastructure agreements to support Anthropic&#8217;s expansion.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the proposed debt guarantee, The New York Times reports that Nvidia is separately evaluating financing approximately US$350 billion worth of AI chips for the Ohio facility. Nvidia previously invested US$30 billion in OpenAI as part of the startup&#8217;s record funding round completed earlier this year. The company had earlier considered investing as much as US$100 billion in OpenAI under a separate strategic agreement that ultimately did not proceed.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI continues expanding its infrastructure strategy as competition intensifies across the AI sector. The company is investing aggressively to secure the computing resources required for future models while facing increasing competition from Anthropic, Google, Amazon, and Meta, all of which are committing hundreds of billions of dollars to AI infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI confidentially filed for an initial public offering in June and is now valued at nearly US$1 trillion in private markets, reflecting investor expectations that the company will maintain its leadership position despite growing competition.<\/p>\n<p>Scale Brings Opportunity and Financial Risk<\/p>\n<p>While investors continue pouring capital into AI infrastructure, analysts caution that projects of this magnitude introduce new financial risks alongside significant growth opportunities. Jeremy Kress, Associate Professor of Business Law, University of Michigan, says a financial backstop reduces lender risk by providing stable capital capable of absorbing potential losses. However, he notes that the arrangement also creates greater financial interdependence between Nvidia and OpenAI because both companies&#8217; success becomes increasingly linked.<\/p>\n<p>Gil Luria, Head of Technology Research, D.A.
