We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Billionaire <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/bulletin\/news\/elon-musk-scott-bessent-ai-retirement-savings-b3023271.html\">Elon Musk\u2019s artificial intelligence company <\/a>is suing the state of Minnesota over a first-of-its-kind law banning technology that allows users to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/aoc-deepfake-ai-porn-senate-republicans-b3020443.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">create fake photos or videos of people naked<\/a> without their consent. <\/p>\n<p>The bill, known as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.revisor.mn.gov\/bills\/94\/2025\/0\/HF\/1606\/\">HF 1606,<\/a> was signed into law by Gov. Tim Walz earlier this year and is set to go into effect Saturday. It bans \u201cnudification,\u201d or the use of artificial intelligence to digitally alter or generate photos or videos to make real people look like they are naked or engaging in sexual acts without their consent. <\/p>\n<p>The law will allow people portrayed in deepfake images to bring a civil lawsuit and seek damages. Companies that violate the law could face a $500,000 penalty for each unlawful use, with few exceptions. <\/p>\n<p>In a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.mnd.235231\/gov.uscourts.mnd.235231.1.0.pdf\">lawsuit filed Monday<\/a> in the U.S. District Court in Minnesota, Musk\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/x.ai\">x.AI<\/a> LLC, which developed the Grok chatbot, argues that the law is too broad and infringes on free speech. <\/p>\n<p>While xAI \u201cdoes not contest Minnesota\u2019s interest in prohibiting the dissemination of artificially generated nude images of real people without their consent,\u201d it argues the law \u201cextends far beyond that goal, exposing a wide array of protected speech to civil liability and government sanctions,\u201d according to the civil complaint. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2255390281...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Elon Musk\u2019s x.AI is suing Minnesota over a new law that would prohibit technology that allows users to create \u2018deepfakes\u2019 or fake images or videos of people naked or engaging in sexual acts without their consent\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Elon Musk\u2019s x.AI is suing Minnesota over a new law that would prohibit technology that allows users to create \u2018deepfakes\u2019 or fake images or videos of people naked or engaging in sexual acts without their consent (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s company said it already prohibits users from creating nude deepfakes without the consent of the person whose likeness is being featured. It noted the company previously \u201cfiled suit against users who evade its extensive technological blockers to generate such images.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>However, attorneys for the company say the new law would stifle Grok users\u2019 First Amendment rights. The complaint said that should the law take effect this week, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/x.ai\">x.AI<\/a> would limit service for users in the state. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSatirical images restored or animated family photographs, and creative projects that Minnesota users could have made by editing images with Grok Image will be affected \u2014 not because <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/x.ai\">x.AI<\/a>\u2019s policies permit misuse (they forbid it), but because HF 1606 leaves <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/x.ai\">x.AI<\/a> no choice,\u201d the company wrote in the complaint. <\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit also claims that the law\u2019s definition of \u201cintimate part\u201d is too broad and would ban depictions of men without shirts, people in swimsuits and other body parts \u201croutinely displayed in public\u201d going \u201cfar beyond what an ordinary person would consider \u2018nudification,\u2019\u201d the complaint claims. <\/p>\n<p>Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who is named as a defendant in the lawsuit, wrote in a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AGEllison\/status\/2082189974447820994?s=20\">statement on X<\/a> that he was prepared to defend the law. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2026-07-06T155909Z_164471774_RC24ZKA0FS8X_RTRMADP_3_MUSK-TWITTER.JPG\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Musk\u2019s company is asking the court to declare the law, which would go into effect on Saturday, unconstitutional\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Musk\u2019s company is asking the court to declare the law, which would go into effect on Saturday, unconstitutional (Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing AI to generate nude images of people against their will is appalling.
