Microsoft<\/a> is done spreading its AI tools across a dozen different products. During the company\u2019s earnings call on Wednesday, CEO Satya Nadella confirmed that Microsoft is building a single app that pulls together Copilot chat, GitHub Copilot, Copilot Cowork, and its Autopilot agent system.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s set to launch sometime in 2026, and Nadella said it will work for both regular consumers and business customers.<\/p>\n

His exact words were that Copilot<\/a> is evolving \u201cfrom chat to Cowork to Autopilots,\u201d and that this quarter Microsoft is bringing those pieces together, including code, into one app. He didn\u2019t give a name, a launch date, or many details beyond that, but he promised more information soon.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t exactly a surprise. Fortune reported months ago<\/a> that Microsoft was quietly working on something like this, merging its chatbot, its coding assistant, its collaborative Cowork tool, and its task-automating agents into a single product. Nadella\u2019s comments on the earnings call just made it official.<\/p>\n

Why Now?<\/p>\n

Right now, if you use Microsoft\u2019s AI tools, you\u2019re bouncing between apps. Copilot chat lives in one place, GitHub Copilot<\/a> lives inside your code editor, Cowork is its own thing, and Autopilot agents operate separately too.<\/p>\n

None of them really talk to each other or remember what you were doing in a different one.<\/p>\n

Merging them means a person could, in theory, ask a question in chat, jump into writing code, have the AI<\/a> remember the context from that chat, then hand off a task to an autonomous agent, all without leaving the app or starting over. That kind of continuity is the whole pitch.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also a competitive angle here. OpenAI<\/a> just launched something similar called ChatGPT Work, which combines its chatbot with Codex, its coding tool.<\/p>\n

Microsoft is both OpenAI\u2019s biggest backer and its rival in the AI-for-work space, so the timing of this announcement right after ChatGPT<\/a> Work isn\u2019t a coincidence.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Actually In It?<\/p>\n

Four things, based on what Nadella described:<\/p>\n

Copilot chat handles general questions, writing help, and everyday tasks. It\u2019s already built into Windows, Edge<\/a>, Bing, and Office.<\/p>\n

GitHub Copilot is the coding assistant that suggests and writes code inside development tools like VS Code.<\/p>\n

Copilot Cowork is Microsoft\u2019s newer tool for longer, ongoing collaboration with AI, where it holds onto context over an extended session instead of starting fresh each time.<\/p>\n

Autopilot refers to agents that can carry out multi-step tasks on their own, like managing emails or updating a dashboard, without someone walking them through every step.<\/p>\n

Putting these under one roof means a developer, for example, could write code, ask a question about a bug, generate tests, and then tell an agent to deploy it, all in the same window.<\/p>\n

What We Still Don\u2019t Know<\/p>\n

Despite the confirmation, Microsoft hasn\u2019t said much about how this will actually work in practice. There\u2019s no launch date beyond \u201cthis year.\u201d No word on pricing. No details on which platforms get it first, whether it\u2019s web, desktop, mobile, or Mac<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For businesses, there are also bigger questions that still need answers. How will personal and work data stay separate?<\/p>\n

How will existing security and compliance policies from tools like Microsoft Purview and Entra apply to AI agents that can act on their own? And which features will require separate subscriptions instead of being included in existing plans?<\/p>\n

Microsoft also shared during the call that Microsoft 365<\/a> Copilot has crossed 30 million paid seats, which shows how central Copilot has already become to the company\u2019s revenue.<\/p>\n
