British television personality and campaigner Katie Piper<\/a> has called out Elon Musk\u2019s Grok<\/a> AI after people asked it to \u201cmake her look normal\u201d.<\/p>\n Thanks for registering! You can update your email subscriptions at any time in the Piper, 42, rose to public prominence after she was attacked in 2008 by an ex-boyfriend, who later threw acid on her<\/a> which caused damage to her face, including blindness in one eye. Since then, the mum-of-two has fronted a number of television shows, competed on Strictly Come Dancing<\/a>, become a regular panelist on Loose Women, and launched the Katie Piper Foundation, to help victims of burns or other traumatic injuries. Piper was also given an OBE in the 2022 New Year Honours for her services to charity.<\/p>\n In a 15 July Instagram post<\/a>, Piper shared a screenshot of an X user asking Grok AI to \u201cfix her face and show me how would she look normal\u201d. The image showed a real image of the star at the 2016 National Television Awards next to Grok\u2019s AI output.<\/p>\n She said in the caption: \u201cToday I found out what I\u2019d look like if I was \u2018normal\u2019\u2026 according to AI and thousands of strangers on the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n The campaigner, who also also repeatedly shown support for the LGBTQ+ community<\/a>, explained she had been tagged in the thread by people debating her looks, adding: \u201cI\u2019m okay. I\u2019m not posting this because I need reassurance.\u201d<\/p>\n The post also included other comments, with one reading: \u201cShe is ugly,\u201d another saying: \u201cWhat\u2019s happening with her?\u201d while someone else said: \u201cShe is looking normal.\u201d<\/p>\n Piper went on in the caption: \u201cI\u2019m wondering what happens when this isn\u2019t aimed at someone who\u2019s spent nearly two decades rebuilding their confidence. What happens when it\u2019s a teenager? Someone newly injured? Someone living with a visible difference who\u2019s still trying to find their feet?\u201d<\/p>\n She continued: \u201cWe\u2019re entering a world where AI doesn\u2019t just generate images. It quietly reinforces ideas about what\u2019s considered \u2018normal\u2019, \u2018acceptable\u2019 or \u2018beautiful\u2019 and millions of people consume those messages without even noticing.\u201d<\/p>\n Piper explained she doesn\u2019t think about the \u201cwhat ifs\u201d of life, but added: \u201cApparently the internet does enough of that for both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n She said the \u201cconversation is much bigger\u201d than just her, saying: \u201cIt\u2019s about AI, bias, beauty standards, anonymity, empathy, and where we draw the line.<\/p>\n \u201cIt feels like the start of a much bigger story, one I think we should investigate. What happens when AI decides what \u2018normal\u2019 looks like? Who gets erased by those standards?\u201d<\/p>\n The X user appears to have deleted the post after it garnered backlash, though not before Piper could screenshot it.<\/p>\n Grok controversy<\/p>\n This is not the first time Grok AI has been called out for images it creates.<\/p>\n It has been used by people to undress strangers or celebrities, and UK broadcasting regulator Ofcom made \u201curgent contact\u201d with X and xAI over \u201cserious concerns\u201d<\/a> after it would found it had also been used to create sexualised images of minors<\/a>.<\/p>\n A 15 January announcement confirmed changes had been made to the service to stop \u201cthe editing of images of real people in revealing clothing\u201d.<\/p>\n Share your thoughts!\u00a0Let us know in the comments below, and remember to keep the conversation respectful.<\/p>\n
