The technology company projected revenue and growth for its Azure cloud business that exceeded analyst expectations, providing evidence that its significant investment in artificial intelligence is yielding results.

For the July-to-September quarter, Microsoft anticipates revenue between $89.85 billion and $90.95 billion, which would represent growth of 16% to 17%. The company also forecast that Azure revenue would increase by approximately 45% in constant currency, an acceleration from the 43% growth recorded in the quarter that just ended.

This optimistic outlook followed better-than-expected fiscal fourth-quarter results. In the April-to-June period, revenue rose 18% year-on-year to $90 billion, surpassing the $87.6 billion forecast by analysts surveyed by FactSet. Net profit climbed 31% to a record $35.8 billion, though this figure was boosted by a $3.2 billion unrealized gain on Microsoft’s investment in the artificial intelligence company Anthropic. Diluted earnings per share reached $4.81, above the analyst forecast of $4.24.

Microsoft Cloud revenue for the quarter was $59.3 billion, up 27% year-on-year. This strong growth reflects higher demand across the Azure cloud computing platform as well as the company’s first-party AI applications and services. Azure and other cloud services revenue increased by 43%. Microsoft indicated that demand for Azure continued to exceed available capacity, despite bringing additional computing infrastructure online during the quarter.

For the full fiscal year ending in June, the company reported $331.8 billion in revenue. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that Azure revenue surpassed $100 billion for the first time during the year, and that Microsoft 365 Copilot reached over 30 million paid seats, reflecting customer confidence in the company’s AI transformation efforts.

Michael J. Wolf, founder and CEO of Activate Consulting, commented that the concurrent growth in Azure and Copilot indicates Microsoft is succeeding on both fronts. He noted that the company is supplying cloud infrastructure for enterprise AI while also monetizing AI tools embedded in everyday worker products.

Investors had been seeking evidence that Azure and Copilot, Microsoft’s flagship AI assistant, could eventually generate returns, as concerns about high AI spending have grown across the industry. Chief financial officer Amy Hood told investors that the company’s capital expenditure plans for the 2026 calendar year remain unchanged. An accounting change will bring that guidance closer to approximately $175 billion, but Hood said the expectations are effectively unchanged. This approach marks a departure from competitors that have been steadily increasing their spending forecasts. Hood had stated earlier in the year that the company expects to invest $190 billion in capital expenditures in 2026.

Bryan Hayes, an investment strategist at Zacks Investment Research, remarked that for the first time in three quarters, the market appears willing to accept that the spending is purchasing something tangible. Danielle Criste, Microsoft’s director of investor relations, expressed confidence in the long-term return on these investments, citing strong demand signals, increasing product usage, and efficiencies being driven across the platform.

Separately, Meta Platforms reported on Wednesday that its second-quarter profit declined even as revenue exceeded Wall Street expectations, with legal expenses and severance costs weighing on results. The parent company of Facebook and Instagram earned $15.85 billion in the April-to-June period, down 14% from $18.34 billion in the same period a year earlier. Revenue grew 28% to $60.8 billion from $47.52 billion. Meta earned $6.18 per share, below the $7.19 expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet, while analysts had forecast revenue of $60.22 billion.

Total costs and expenses for Meta jumped 55% to $42.03 billion, including $2.4 billion in charges related to legal proceedings and $1.18 billion in severance expenses connected with the company’s May workforce reduction. Its operating margin narrowed to 31% from 43% a year earlier. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that AI is accelerating the company’s core business, powering next-generation products, and opening new enterprise opportunities, adding that results are already showing.

 1.
