Erin Maye QuadeAP<\/p>\n<p>The law, which goes into effect on Saturday, would levy a fine of $500,000 every time a website or app allows a user to create these images.<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s lawyers claimed that the legislation infringes on First Amendment rights and argued that too many images would fall within the scope of the law. But Minnesota state Sen. Erin Maye Quade, a Democrat who first proposed the bill after being approached by multiple victims of \u201cnudify\u201d apps, quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/erinmayequade.bsky.social\/post\/3mrqzto32ts2m\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">debunked<\/a> these objections.<\/p>\n<p>In a video posted on social media, Quade pointed out <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/post\/204869\/elon-musk-grok-sexually-explicit-photos-children\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an article<\/a> in which xAI admitted that its Grok chatbot allowed for the creation of explicit images of babies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wonder why Elon Musk\u2019s company is so interested in allowing nudification technology to happen,\u201d she said sarcastically.<\/p>\n<p>Quade then explained that the law contains provisions that require images to depict intimate parts of human anatomy that must be \u201cso realistic that a reasonable person would think it was real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can promise you that our law only protects people from being victims of image-based sexual abuse, and it protects us from companies who profit off of image-based sexual abuse\u2014unless maybe you have some sort of weird, creepy, illegal image generator. She said that the end goal is to have a national ban on the creation of this imagery through a network of state laws.<\/p>\n<p>State Rep. Jess Hanson, who shepherded the bill through the Minnesota House, also <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wLtPOsGD7Mo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">criticized<\/a> Musk during the press conference, saying that he \u201changs out with the [Jeffrey] Epstein class\u201d and that \u201cwe cannot act surprised when he\u2019s trying to protect the number one tool used to make child sexual abuse material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does the richest man in the world want to protect a feature that makes children naked?\u201d Hanson added.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who was named in the suit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/minnesota\/news\/minnesota-ban-ai-nudification-technology\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a> that \u201cAI nudification robs the target of their dignity and can cause immense harm on an emotional, personal, and professional level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/AP26005628903869-1.jpg\" alt=\"Minnesota Gov. Tim WalzAP<\/p>\n<p>Quade\u2019s bill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/minnesota\/news\/minnesota-house-passes-bill-banning-nudification-technology\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">passed the Minnesota legislature<\/a> with overwhelming bipartisan support, with only one opposing vote. It was then signed into law by Democratic Gov. Tim Walz.<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s Gok chatbot has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2026\/1\/13\/2363260\/news\/oh-great-elon-musk-s-pervy-ai-is-about-to-pollute-the-pentagon\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">been blocked<\/a> in multiple countries for being used to create nonconsensual sexual images of minors, and it even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2026\/2\/3\/2367035\/news\/trump-is-ignoring-x-s-child-sexual-abuse-scandal-but-france-isn-t\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">triggered a police raid<\/a> on xAI\u2019s offices in France.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This has not prevented the Trump administration from giving out federal contracts to the company, with plans to integrate xAI\u2019s technology into government systems.<\/p>\n<p>Grok was also involved in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2025\/7\/9\/2332482\/news\/Musk-s-anti-woke-AI-chatbot-goes-full-Nazi-then-gets-shut-off\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">widely publicized incident<\/a> last year when it declared itself \u201cMechaHitler\u201d and espoused racist language, echoing Musk\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/29\/opinion\/elon-musk-far-right-remigration.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bigoted worldview<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Musk was a major donor to Donald Trump\u2019s 2020 presidential campaign and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2025\/12\/16\/2358670\/news\/Musk-opens-his-wallet-for-the-GOP-again\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">among the largest GOP donors<\/a> ahead of this year\u2019s midterms.<\/p>\n<p>\tWe&#8217;ll get straight to the point: The financial hardships that Daily Kos is facing this year are tough.<\/p>\n<p>We continue to be paywall-free.
