At least 160 companies joined the platform in July alone, signaling a sharp acceleration in adoption as OpenAI looks to convert its massive user base into a significant revenue stream.

Ad load is also climbing. Sensor Tower found that users of the ChatGPT mobile app saw approximately twice as many advertisements per hour in July compared with April. The rapid expansion comes just months after OpenAI began cautiously rolling out ads, with the company’s ads chief Dave Dugan telling Business Insider in June that the initial approach was deliberately conservative.

“We’ve learned so much about user satisfaction, and as we’ve now, four months in, we’ve gotten more confidence about how we can deliver volume,” Dugan said.

The advertiser mix has shifted markedly toward mainstream consumer brands. In April, technology-focused companies such as Speechify, Jotform, and Natural Intelligence dominated the list of most visible advertisers. By July, those names had been replaced by household brands including Booking Holdings(BKNG), Intuit(INTU), Home Depot(HD), and L.L.Bean. Sports clothing retailer Scheels was the only company to appear in the top 10 advertisers during both months.

“ChatGPT is effectively diversifying its advertiser base, appealing to a wider swath of businesses, which bodes well for ramping monetization and expanding ad formats,” Sensor Tower wrote in its analysis.

Financial services has recorded the most dramatic growth among advertising categories. The sector’s share of ad spending on ChatGPT jumped from 2% in April to 12% in July, making it the third-largest category behind shopping and software. BestMoney.com was identified as one of the platform’s leading advertisers during the month. Travel and tourism, along with jobs and education, also increased their presence. Other top advertisers in July included Expedia(EXPE), GetYourGuide Deutschland, recruiting firm Talent Inc., and retailer Quince.

Despite the diversification, retail remains ChatGPT’s largest advertising sector by total spend, even as its overall share has declined.

OpenAI currently displays advertisements to users on its free tier and the $8-a-month Go plan, which together account for the vast majority of its user base. Sensor Tower estimated that the ChatGPT app reached 1 billion monthly users in May, providing OpenAI with an enormous audience to monetize alongside its subscription business.

The advertising push is still in its early stages. OpenAI reported annual recurring advertising revenue of $100 million in May, a figure that remains a fraction of what the industry’s dominant players generate. Google parent Alphabet reported $81.6 billion in ad revenue for its most recent fiscal quarter, while Meta Platforms(META) posted $59.3 billion.

OpenAI is expanding into new markets and adding more tools to attract advertisers, though some have described the self-serve ad product launched in May as rudimentary compared to the mature platforms operated by Google and Meta. For now, ChatGPT places ads beneath the AI’s responses to user prompts and avoids displaying them alongside queries about personal health or politics.

Sensor Tower’s estimates are derived primarily from user panel data and third-party sources, according to Abe Yousef, senior insights analyst at the firm.
