Two of the internet’s most recognizable platforms moved against low-quality AI-generated content this week, in back-to-back announcements that signal how quickly “AI slop” has shifted from an internet in-joke to a stated product priority.<\/p>\n
Snapchat updated its Spotlight discovery feed<\/a> on Friday so that wholly AI-generated videos are no longer eligible for recommendations, a change Snap CEO Evan Spiegel<\/a> amplified in a post announcing the company is “stopping AI slop on Spotlight.” In its official update, the company said it wants Spotlight to remain a home for authentic creativity from real people, and that its ranking algorithm now rewards human-made content over fully synthetic videos \u2014 even when those videos carry AI transparency disclosures<\/a>.<\/p>\n The change is a demotion, not a ban. Creators can still post AI-generated clips, and videos enhanced or edited with Snapchat’s own AI creative tools remain eligible for recommendations<\/a>, with visible indicators showing that AI played a role. Snap also pointed to growth on the human side of the ledger: unique Spotlight contributors are up more than 120% year over year<\/a>, a figure the company cited as evidence that its authenticity push is resonating with creators.<\/p>\n A day earlier, LinkedIn announced its own set of measures<\/a>, headlined by a new reporting option that lets members flag posts with a label reading “Seems like AI slop.” The button, accessible from the three-dot menu on any post<\/a>, hides the flagged content from the user’s view and feeds a signal back to LinkedIn’s systems. “AI slop is a top priority for all of us,” LinkedIn chief product officer Hari Srinivasan wrote in the announcement.<\/p>\n The Microsoft-owned platform said user reports will help train new classifiers designed to identify AI slop<\/a> and other low-quality content, and that flagged posts will see reduced algorithmic reach beyond the poster’s own network. Members whose posts are frequently flagged will be privately notified in their analytics dashboards. Srinivasan said the company has already blocked billions of AI-generated posts and comments in recent months.<\/p>\n Notably, LinkedIn is also retiring its own “enhance your post” AI writing feature \u2014 a tool critics said encouraged exactly the kind of content<\/a> the platform now wants to reduce \u2014 and replacing it with a proofreading tool intended to preserve the writer’s own voice. Srinivasan drew a distinction in his announcement, writing that AI and slop are not the same thing.<\/p>\n Users Have Opinions<\/p>\n The reaction to LinkedIn’s button was swift, and much of it was pointed. The platform has become a frequent target of AI-slop criticism: AI detection firm Pangram found that a large share of long-form LinkedIn posts \u2014 over 40% by one measure<\/a> \u2014 appear to be fully AI-generated. Substack CEO Chris Best invoked the platform by name earlier in July when announcing his company’s own AI-detection partnership with Pangram, writing that Substack built the feature<\/a> because it did not want to turn into LinkedIn. Some users initially assumed the “Seems like AI slop” label was a joke until they found it live in the app.<\/p>\n For Snapchat, the reception has been comparatively warmer, with the change framed as protecting the reach of creators who invest time in original work \u2014 reach that mass-produced synthetic clips can otherwise crowd out.<\/p>\n A Platform-Wide Turn<\/p>\n The two announcements extend a pattern that has accelerated across 2026. YouTube updated its monetization rules<\/a> to block payouts on generic, template-based AI content. Substack integrated Pangram’s AI detection into its app. Pangram itself raised $9 million this week<\/a> to expand its detection work. Digg shut down its Reddit competitor in March, citing an inability to control the volume of bots flooding the site.<\/p>\n
