Creators can still post AI-generated clips, and videos enhanced or edited with Snapchat’s own AI creative tools remain eligible for recommendations, with visible indicators showing that AI played a role. Snap also pointed to growth on the human side of the ledger: unique Spotlight contributors are up more than 120% year over year, a figure the company cited as evidence that its authenticity push is resonating with creators.

A day earlier, LinkedIn announced its own set of measures, headlined by a new reporting option that lets members flag posts with a label reading “Seems like AI slop.” The button, accessible from the three-dot menu on any post, hides the flagged content from the user’s view and feeds a signal back to LinkedIn’s systems. “AI slop is a top priority for all of us,” LinkedIn chief product officer Hari Srinivasan wrote in the announcement.

The Microsoft-owned platform said user reports will help train new classifiers designed to identify AI slop and other low-quality content, and that flagged posts will see reduced algorithmic reach beyond the poster’s own network. Members whose posts are frequently flagged will be privately notified in their analytics dashboards. Srinivasan said the company has already blocked billions of AI-generated posts and comments in recent months.

Notably, LinkedIn is also retiring its own “enhance your post” AI writing feature — a tool critics said encouraged exactly the kind of content the platform now wants to reduce — and replacing it with a proofreading tool intended to preserve the writer’s own voice. Srinivasan drew a distinction in his announcement, writing that AI and slop are not the same thing.

Users Have Opinions

The reaction to LinkedIn’s button was swift, and much of it was pointed. The platform has become a frequent target of AI-slop criticism: AI detection firm Pangram found that a large share of long-form LinkedIn posts — over 40% by one measure — appear to be fully AI-generated. Substack CEO Chris Best invoked the platform by name earlier in July when announcing his company’s own AI-detection partnership with Pangram, writing that Substack built the feature because it did not want to turn into LinkedIn. Some users initially assumed the “Seems like AI slop” label was a joke until they found it live in the app.

For Snapchat, the reception has been comparatively warmer, with the change framed as protecting the reach of creators who invest time in original work — reach that mass-produced synthetic clips can otherwise crowd out.

A Platform-Wide Turn

The two announcements extend a pattern that has accelerated across 2026. YouTube updated its monetization rules to block payouts on generic, template-based AI content. Substack integrated Pangram’s AI detection into its app. Pangram itself raised $9 million this week to expand its detection work. Digg shut down its Reddit competitor in March, citing an inability to control the volume of bots flooding the site.

The timing is not incidental. Americans are using AI more than ever — about half of U.S. adults (49%) say they have used chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot, up from 33% in 2024, according to Pew Research Center. A KFF study found 29% of Americans now consult AI tools at least monthly for health information, up from 17% two years ago. But adoption has not translated into trust: 69% of Americans say they trust AI companies “a little” or “not at all” to act in users’ best interest, per CNN polling, and Pew found 40% of Americans expect AI to have a negative impact on society over the next 20 years, against just 16% who expect a positive one.

That gap — rising usage, falling trust — is the tension platforms are now navigating. People want AI as a tool. They increasingly resent it as a feed. This week, Snapchat and LinkedIn placed their bets on the difference.

mix race people chatting on social media with ai helper bot assistant profile generation digital communication concept horizontal…

[2
24,25,7425,61948,2588,43612,1928
post-126701","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ai","tag-ai","tag-artificial-intelligence","tag-linkedin","tag-pangram","tag-snapchat","tag-substack","tag-youtube
["GET
