The agent walks through the options, then stalls the moment it needs real financial data. Sierra and Plaid built an integration to close that gap: Sierra’s AI agents can now request permission to connect a customer’s bank account mid-conversation and use that data without the customer leaving the chat, according to a blog post announcing the integration.

The lending example is specific. A borrower who falls short of qualifying on credit score alone used to wait for a human loan officer to manually verify income and spending. Now the agent can request access through Plaid Link, review cash-flow data and continue the application in the same conversation, Sierra said in the announcement. The company is applying the same approach to insurance claims and fraud resolution, cases where an agent’s usefulness previously ended the moment it needed data it had no permission to see.

This is a different use case from what OpenAI built with Plaid in May 2026, when ChatGPT Pro users gained the ability to connect bank accounts so the chatbot could answer financial questions grounded in real account data, PYMNTS reported at the time. More than 200 million people already ask ChatGPT about personal finance every month, according to OpenAI. That integration answers questions. Sierra’s takes action, moving a stalled application forward rather than explaining why it stalled.

Sierra’s Agents Now Run on Plaid’s Existing Reach

Sierra crossed $150 million in annual recurring revenue in early 2026 and raised $950 million in May at a valuation above $15 billion, according to TechCrunch. Plaid’s reach dwarfs that: more than 12,000 financial institutions connect through it, and roughly half of U.S. adults with a bank account have used Plaid Link at least once, according to Plaid’s own figures. Sierra is not building financial connectivity from scratch. It is plugging its agents into infrastructure that already touches most of the country’s banked population.

The integration runs on Horizon, a Sierra platform launched July 16 and built for agents that work a customer relationship over days or weeks instead of closing one query and disconnecting. Every account connection requires explicit consumer consent through Plaid first, and Sierra layers monitoring on top: automated checks on agent responses for compliance issues, and a way for a human employee to intervene mid-conversation, the company said.

Consumers Seek Financial Advice From Unlicensed AI

That trend is running ahead of any clear rulebook for it. Some 62% of Gen Z consumers say they are open to using AI for financial planning guidance, PYMNTS Intelligence found. More than a quarter of U.K. consumers already trust ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini for financial advice, with limited awareness that the protections covering licensed advisers do not extend to a chatbot, the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority’s Mills Review found, PYMNTS reported. Neither figure describes an agent connecting directly to a bank account. Both describe the appetite that made an integration like Sierra and Plaid’s commercially inevitable: consumers were asking AI for financial help long before any AI system had permission to see their actual finances.

That access is riskiest in the same workflow Sierra just automated. Loan applications already produce the highest concentration of “know your agent” (KYA) threats identified in PYMNTS Intelligence research with Trulioo, with 63.2% of surveyed firms reporting agent-driven threats there.

A human linking an account leaves a clear consent trail: one person, one login, one moment of approval. An agent doing it mid-conversation blurs all three, and untangling who authorized it, what it can see and who answers for it is the question the rest of the KYA push is still trying to answer.

A customer asks an artificial intelligence agent for help refinancing a loan.
