{"id":129964,"date":"2026-08-05T07:24:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T07:24:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/129964\/"},"modified":"2026-08-05T07:24:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T07:24:13","slug":"ai-detectors-are-out-new-approaches-are-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/129964\/","title":{"rendered":"AI Detectors Are Out, New Approaches Are In"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As faculty prepare their assessments for the new academic year, many are facing an artificial intelligence\u2013powered academic integrity conundrum.<\/p>\n<p>First, there\u2019s the undeniable reality that access to AI tools have made large-scale cheating easier than ever. Autonomous AI agents have shown that they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/tech-innovation\/artificial-intelligence\/2026\/02\/26\/agentic-ai-can-complete-whole-courses-now\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">can complete\u2014and ace\u2014entire online courses<\/a> without any help from the student enrolled in the class. Faculty at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/faculty\/learning-assessment\/2026\/07\/08\/brown-professor-suspects-most-his-class-used-ai-cheat\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brown <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/parents\/family\/professor-catches-ai-cheating-hidden-word-rcna589421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Alcorn State Universities<\/a> went viral this summer after setting traps that indicated the majority of their students used AI to complete major assessments. And according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacu.org\/newsroom\/national-survey-95-of-college-faculty-fear-student-overreliance-on-ai-and-diminished-critical-thinking-among-learners-who-use-generative-ai-tools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">one recent national survey<\/a>, 73\u00a0percent of faculty say they have personally dealt with academic integrity issues involving AI.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, it\u2019s becoming increasingly difficult to hold students accountable for suspected unauthorized AI use. <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s40979-023-00140-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Numerous studies<\/a> have shown that AI detectors\u2014such as those developed by OpenAI, Writer, Copyleaks, GPTZero and CrossPlag\u2014exhibit inconsistencies, produce false positives when evaluating human-generated writing and are <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/patterns\/fulltext\/S2666-3899(23)00130-7\" target=\"_blank\">biased against non-native English writers<\/a>. In some cases, those false positives have resulted in accused students <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/gradpilot.com\/news\/ai-cheating-lawsuits-tracker\" target=\"_blank\">filing lawsuits against their universities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That reality has prompted a growing number of institutions\u2014including Yale, Vanderbilt, Johns Hopkins and Indiana Universities\u2014to enact academic integrity policies that ban or discourage faculty reliance on AI-detection programs as the sole evidence of alleged cheating. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/aiweekly.co\/alerts\/yale-johns-hopkins-waterloo-pull-back-on-ai-detection-tools\" target=\"_blank\">At least a dozen universities,<\/a> including Northwestern, Georgetown and New York Universities, have also disabled Turnitin\u2019s AI detection software, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2023\/04\/01\/chatgpt-cheating-detection-turnitin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">found to have a much higher false-positive rate<\/a> than the company originally suggested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome tools claim to detect whether a student used AI, but these services are highly unreliable,\u201d reads the newly updated <a href=\"https:\/\/kelley.iu.edu\/Kelley_AI_Playbook.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Faculty AI Playbook<\/a> at Indiana\u2019s Kelley School of Business, which prohibits the use of AI detectors. \u201cInstead of trying to \u2018catch\u2019 AI use, focus on designing assignments that encourage process, reasoning, and authentic engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For some universities, the turn away from AI detectors is also motivated by the fact that students are increasingly deploying AI to game the detectors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvidence also shows that \u2018humanizing\u2019 programs are very successful at reducing or eliminating the percentage of AI usage that is successfully detected in generative AI-produced writing,\u201d Jennifer Frederick, executive director of Yale\u2019s Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning and her colleague Alfred Guy, director of the center\u2019s undergraduate writing and tutoring programs, wrote in a joint email to Inside Higher Ed. \u201cWe want to avoid the inevitable cat and mouse game created by AI detection tools: As the tools get better at \u2018catching\u2019 AI generated text, so do methods to evade detection. This becomes a technical exercise rather than a learning event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Difficult, Delicate Moment\u2019<\/p>\n<p>So where does this leave faculty members who want to ensure that students are learning and not offloading thinking to a machine?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a difficult, delicate moment right now. And I\u2019m not sure we have all the answers,\u201d Kevin Yee, director of the Faculty Center for Teaching &amp; Learning at the University of Central Florida, told Inside Higher Ed. \u201cIf faculty had an AI detector that was reliable, that\u2019s what they would use. But many are reluctantly moving in the direction of assignment redesign because they are at wit\u2019s end\u201d over AI-powered cheating.<\/p>\n<p>From what he\u2019s observed, about half of faculty want to make as few changes as possible to AI-proof their assessments. But staying the course may be a viable option only for those who teach in-person classes with fewer than 30 students. In a small environment, \u201cthey can actually succeed in convincing students not to take these shortcuts, establishing strong relationships and convincing students that the learning is really what matters here,\u201d he said. \u201cIn larger classes, there\u2019s less of a personal connection between students and faculty, so faculty need to redesign their assessments to be more AI-resilient or a completely kind of deliverable that AI can\u2019t do, such as a blue book exam or an in-person oral exam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To help faculty redesign their assignments, Yee<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/stars.library.ucf.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1101&amp;context=oer\" target=\"_blank\"> co-authored a guide<\/a> that contains dozens of suggestions centered on making students show how they are using AI to support their work. Faculty can also use AI to facilitate reworking their assessments by feeding the assignment into a large language model and asking for help making it more AI-resilient. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be a multi-week process,\u201d Yee said. \u201cAI can provide different ideas that don\u2019t make course redesign nearly as hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although it creates additional work for faculty, redesigning assessments that can\u2019t be outsourced to AI is critical for institutions on the hook to prove the value of their course offerings. \u201cThis is going to take eternal vigilance,\u201d he said. \u201cAI is never going away and it\u2019s going to proliferate into alternative formats, and many endanger the educational experience. Thinking and learning are meant to be effortful and AI reduces effort and friction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But getting the majority of faculty on board with changing traditional assessments will be \u201cthe biggest lift\u201d for universities responding to rising AI-related academic integrity concerns, said Marc Watkins, a writing and composition lecturer and director of the AI Institute for Teachers at the University of Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t even fathom the cost this will have for a single university, let alone the majority of our campuses, to go through this,\u201d he told Inside Higher Ed, citing the human labor and resources required to scale AI-resilience tactics, such as proctoring oral exams. No matter the challenges, though, \u201cIt shouldn\u2019t all be on faculty to [navigate]. They should be asking for support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Real Trick\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Securing a commitment from faculty to overhaul courses will also require some deep self-reflection from academics themselves, said Tricia Bertram Gallant, director of the academic integrity office and testing center at UC San Diego and co-author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theoppositeofcheating.com\/the-opposite-of-cheating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Opposite of Cheating: Teaching for Integrity in the Age of AI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past 20-plus years, there have been changes that have slowly degraded the validity of our 20th-century assessments,\u201d she said, pointing to the rise of internet-supported plagiarism, the contract cheating industry and now AI. \u201cYet, for the most part, higher education hasn\u2019t changed. We\u2019re still relying on the unsupervised written word as evidence of learning. The real trick is acknowledging that that doesn\u2019t work anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And now that AI has made the temptation for students to cheat on traditional writing assignments so strong, Bertram Gallant said it\u2019s no longer feasible for faculty to foster academic integrity by policing AI use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot be giving unsupervised assessments to students expecting them to resist AI. They\u2019re not going to be learning, we\u2019re going to be spending our time trying to catch them cheating and they\u2019re going to graduate and realize they just wasted four years,\u201d she said.
