Venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya predicted that the rise of AI agents and growing corporate concerns over data security will fundamentally reshape how enterprises buy software.<\/p>\n
Palihapitiya Says AI Will End \u2018Bottoms Up\u2019<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, in a post on X, Palihapitiya argued that the long-popular bottoms-up go-to-market (GTM) strategy, in which employees adopt software before companies purchase enterprise licenses, will become increasingly ineffective in the AI era.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn a world of agents + harness + application, bottoms up will turn out to be the worst strategic GTM decision of the past decade,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n
He said AI would rapidly produce \u201cclone after clone\u201d of bottoms-up software tools, reducing their strategic value while intensifying concerns about AI sovereignty. <\/p>\n
According to Palihapitiya, companies will increasingly worry that employees using unapproved AI applications could expose proprietary information, or \u201calpha,\u201d to third-party AI systems.<\/p>\n
He also predicted that chief financial officers would play a larger role in restricting software purchases.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe final nail in the coffin will be CFOs wrapping corporate cards with smart filters so any tool that has downstream IP\/alpha leakage won\u2019t be authorized anyways,\u201d Palihapitiya wrote.<\/p>\n
AI Cybersecurity Risks<\/p>\n
Palihapitiya\u2019s comments come as AI security has become an increasing focus across the industry.<\/p>\n
Last week, Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue called for mandatory disclosures of AI-related cyberattacks<\/a>, arguing that transparency and access to defensive tools were essential for improving AI safety. <\/p>\n He said incidents involving OpenAI, Hugging Face and Anthropic showed that limiting AI model releases would not eliminate risks and urged companies to share \u201cagent traces\u201d to determine whether failures were caused by humans, systems or AI.<\/p>\n
