But true breakthroughs tend to be de\ufb01ned by the moment when they enter mass consciousness.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In January 2025, for example, the launch of DeepSeek\u2019s R1 model created headlines across the world, with media commentators highlighting how the Chinese company appeared to have achieved the same performance as leading AI models at a fraction of the cost<a id=\"link-1\"\/><a href=\"#footnote-1\" data-aria-label=\"footnote1\">1,<\/a><a id=\"link-2\"\/><a href=\"#footnote-2\" data-aria-label=\"footnote2\">2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For robotics or physical AI, a similar awakening may occur when humans start to see a much closer re\ufb02ection of themselves in machines: \ufb02exible and intuitive rather than mechanical and repetitive.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The advent of these humanoids, as they are being termed, is being driven by the technical integration of foundational AI models (so\ufb05ware) into robots (hardware). This is enabling robots to use cognitive reasoning to interact with and learn from the environment around them for the \ufb01rst time.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The current wave of investments into robotics has a new name \u2013 embodied AI.
