Anthropic also said it will maintain a \u201cmulti-chip\u201d approach, continuing to use hardware from AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD rather than breaking with existing suppliers immediately.<\/p>\n

The plan comes as Anthropic explores manufacturing options, with The Information reported last month that it was scouting Samsung as a potential manufacturing partner for these custom chips.<\/p>\n

Co-Design and the Cost<\/p>\n

Quartz reported that Anthropic confirmed it will hire engineers to co-design chips and models so Claude can run faster and at greater scale, and it described the job as a \u201ccustom silicon team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quartz also cited Reuters-linked industry sources saying the price tag for developing an advanced AI chip can approach half a billion dollars, driven by specialized engineering talent and the high cost of achieving reliable, defect-free fabrication.<\/p>\n

Business Insider said the engineer position requires \u201cdirect personal contribution\u201d to the finalization and shipping of semiconductor designs, and it quoted the listing\u2019s description of a candidate who has \u201cshipped silicon\u201d and a \u201crealistic relationship with schedules.\u201d<\/p>\n

The same Business Insider report said Anthropic will continue a \u201cmulti-chip approach\u201d in which hardware from AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD remains central to scaling efforts.<\/p>\n

In parallel, Business Insider noted that Reuters previously reported Anthropic was exploring designing its own chips, while The Information reported last month that Anthropic held talks with Samsung Electronics as a potential manufacturing partner.<\/p>\n

Supply Chain Stakes<\/p>\n

Finimize said Anthropic gave no timeline and that industry sources estimate an advanced AI-chip design can cost about $500 million once specialized engineering and manufacturing yields are included.<\/p>\n

Techzine Global reported that Anthropic will continue to use a \u201cmulti-chip approach,\u201d with hardware from AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD remaining central, while also seeking engineers for broad expertise in chip design and verification.<\/p>\n

Techzine Global added that, through a long-term agreement with Google and Broadcom, Anthropic will have access to approximately 3.5 gigawatts of custom TPU capacity starting in 2027, and it described this as additional capacity alongside existing suppliers.<\/p>\n
