The question of who might be responsible for the actions of artificial intelligence is now becoming a burning legal issue, and the future of related court cases will likely be interesting.<\/p>\n
Last month, two different Open AI computer models were being tested, and one of them broke away from its planned tasks, accessing the internet without the knowledge or permission of its operator, then attacking a website.<\/p>\n
That website, Hugging Face, said it’s been recovering from the attack and doesn’t plan a lawsuit against the companies conducting the computer testing — but what if they did decide to go to court?<\/p>\n
Frankly, Hugging Face CEO Clement Delangue said, he doesn’t want to see AI cyberagents wandering around the internet, destroying websites and platforms without guidelines on who’s legally responsible for damage from AI, and how to compensate those hurt with awards from the court system.<\/p>\n
The High Tech Texan Michael Garfield says it’s too early to tell what will happen, since like all businesses there are phases that new industries go through before they’re tested in court.<\/p>\n
“First somebody comes up with a great invention, then it goes through research and development, and then it’s gotta go through testing, and then it’s got to go through marketing, and then at some point there’s the legal team,” he says.<\/p>\n
But then there’s also the public’s perception of how the business of AI is coming along.<\/p>\n
“I think the public is worried, if there is an issue, who’s responsible? And there is no answer.”<\/p>\n
It boils down to the maturity of the industry, and the public AI industry is in its infancy, so we can likely look forward to court cases in the coming years that will be very interesting and quite surprising.<\/p>\n
But the KPRC 950 Houston radio host Michael Garfield says if AI needs more human supervision, that need for kind of control should influence the career decisions some Americans make right now.<\/p>\n
The more people learn about AI and learn how they can work with and control AI, the better for the future of AI.<\/p>\n
