California. US search engine company Google’s parent company Alphabet has made a significant leadership change in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The company has appointed Google DeepMind Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Demis Hassabis to the newly created position of Chief Scientist.<\/p>\n
With this change, Hassabis will step away from the daily management of DeepMind and focus on the company’s long-term AI strategy and research related to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).<\/p>\n
As this announcement became public, Alphabet’s share price fell by approximately 4 percent, according to international media. Investors are keenly watching the leadership change and the company’s future strategy. Nobel laureate scientist Demis Hassabis said in an internal message to employees that he will now work as Alphabet’s Chief Scientist. He will no longer be the CEO of Google DeepMind, but will remain involved as the company’s chairman.<\/p>\n
He stated that the main objective of his new responsibility is to make the development of Artificial General Intelligence safe, responsible, and beneficial to humanity. AGI refers to artificial intelligence capable of performing various intellectual tasks at a human level or higher. Most AI systems currently in use are developed for specific tasks, but AGI is expected to have the ability to learn, understand, and make decisions independently in various fields.<\/p>\n
Hassabis stated that he has decided to fully concentrate on research and strategy because he believes the era of AGI is approaching. Alphabet’s Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai also praised Hassabis’s new role in a message to company employees.<\/p>\n
He said, ‘Demis and I have been discussing such a role for a long time that would help him fully focus on building the future of AGI. This is an extremely important task not only for Alphabet but for all of humanity.’ Pichai also expressed confidence that no one else is more suitable for this responsibility than Hassabis.<\/p>\n
After Demis Hassabis stepped back from daily management, Kori Kawukcuoglu will take over the daily responsibilities of DeepMind. Kawukcuoglu, currently the Chief Technology Officer of DeepMind, has also been given the responsibility of Senior Vice President. He will also hold the role of Alphabet’s Chief AI Architect. The company has not given him the title of CEO.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, some prominent AI and engineering experts from Google have left the company. Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le have jointly founded a new startup called ‘Discovery Loop’. This company has been registered as a ‘Public Benefit Corporation’. The company has announced that it will conduct new research in the fields of AI, machine learning, science, and engineering.
