{"id":132852,"date":"2026-08-07T12:39:24","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T12:39:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/132852\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T12:39:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T12:39:24","slug":"ai-used-to-design-brand-new-viruses-but-experts-fear-a-lot-could-go-wrong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/132852\/","title":{"rendered":"AI used to design brand new viruses \u2014 but experts fear a lot could go wrong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers used artificial intelligence to create 16 new viruses capable of being reproduced in a lab to fight antibiotic resistant infections \u2014 but experts warn that the computer-made pathogens pose \u201curgent\u201d safety risks, including fears it could be used to create bioweapons.<\/p>\n<p>The Stanford University experiment used an AI model known as Evo1 and Evo2, which instead of modeling language of a text, like ChatGPT, are trained to predict genetic codes of viruses, bacteria, plants and even people, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c5y3j3ngevmo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">according to the BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The AI produced hundreds of designs of a specific type of virus known as bacteriophage to infect E.Coli bacteria, of which 16 were successful, according to the study, which was first published in the journal Science.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford University\u2019s Brian Hie examines a protein structure generated by Evo2, an AI genome design tool.<\/p>\n<p>Developing new bacteriophages could lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/08\/31\/revolutionary-ai-implant-a-game-changer-for-many-illnesses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new ways of treating infections<\/a> that have become resistant to antibiotics, the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first time entire genomes have been successfully designed by AI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a next step in the complexity that\u2019s designable by generative AI, this is the first time generative AI has been used to design a complete genome, it\u2019s something that can replicate and have other functions inside cells\u2026 this was new territory for us,\u201d Brian Hie, assistant professor at Stanford University, told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>However, the breakthrough raises serious concerns about technology\u2019s ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/07\/us-news\/an-ai-version-of-you-could-live-forever-but-who-would-you-really-be\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">create new life that never previously existed<\/a>, known as synthetic biology, and its potential to create diseases deadly to humans.<\/p>\n<p>The findings raise \u201curgent biosafety and biosecurity questions,\u201d wrote Dr Thomas Inglesby and Dr Moritz Hanke from the Center for Health Security at Johns Hopkins University in a commentary accompanying the publication in the journal Science.<\/p>\n<p>New bacteriophages could offer a new weapon against antibiotic-resistant infections, researchers said. catalin \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no longer a matter of \u201cwhether generative viral genome design will exist,\u201d the study proves, but whether the technology can be used without \u201cenabling serious harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctors emphasized that new viruses that could cause disease \u201cshould not be pursued.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hie, however, stressed that his team excluded all viruses that could infect complex organisms from the AI\u2019s training database and only performed research on the bacteriophage.<\/p>\n<p>All the research took place in a secure lab, Hie said, and argued that safeguards are already in place \u201censuring that the technology is used for good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But AI systems have defected and acted on their own before as the technology grows increasingly better, smarter and more widely used.<\/p>\n<p>Language models trained on millions of genomes enable the generation of complete phages.  AAAS<\/p>\n<p>Just last month, GPT maker OpenAI <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/22\/business\/openai-agent-goes-rogue-hacks-into-rival-ai-startup-during-security-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">revealed an experimental model went rogue<\/a> during an internal cybersecurity test, escaping its isolated testing environment and hacking a rival AI developer in what the company called an \u201cunprecedented\u201d incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI intentionally switched off many of the safeguards that normally prevent its AI from helping carry out dangerous hacks during an internal stress test, but the model broke out of its digital sandbox, accessed the internet and attacked Hugging Face\u2019s systems.
