Cardinal Langa died on Monday, August 3, at Maputo Central Hospital, members of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique<\/a> (CEM) announced<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs he completes his earthly pilgrimage, CEM gives thanks to God for the life and ministry of Cardinal Langa, who dedicated himself faithfully to the service of the Catholic Church in Mozambique, particularly in the Diocese of Xai-Xai,\u201d the Bishops said.<\/p>\n

They called on the People of God to \u201cunite in prayer for the eternal repose of his soul,\u201d adding that details of the funeral rites would be communicated later.<\/p>\n

Born in Mangunze, Gaza Province, in October 1927, Cardinal Langa was ordained a Priest in June 1957. In 1976, Pope St. Paul VI appointed him the first Bishop of the newly established Diocese of Xai-Xai, a ministry he exercised for more than two decades during Mozambique’s civil war and the challenging years of social upheaval and pastoral reconstruction.<\/p>\n

Throughout his episcopal ministry, he promoted the pastoral life of the Diocese while giving particular attention to communities affected by conflict, epidemics, and natural disasters.<\/p>\n

The late Cardinal also made a significant contribution to the Church’s evangelizing mission through language. He participated in the translation of the documents of the Second Vatican Council into Mozambique’s principal local languages, helping make the Council’s teaching more accessible to Catholic communities across the country.<\/p>\n

After retiring in July 2004, Cardinal Langa remained closely connected to the Diocese of Xai-Xai and continued to be widely respected for his simplicity, pastoral presence, and fidelity to the Gospel.<\/p>\n

His creation as Cardinal by Pope Francis in February 2015 marked a historic milestone for the Church in Mozambique, making him the country’s second native Cardinal.<\/p>\n

Concluding his message of condolence, Pope Leo XIV entrusted the late Cardinal to God’s mercy and imparted his Apostolic Blessing to those mourning him.<\/p>\n
