Recently, as the ‘On-Device AI’ market, which combines artificial intelligence (AI) operations with smartphones, PCs, automobiles, and physical AI, has grown, attention is being paid to neural network processing units (NPUs), which are semiconductors that perform operations with low power. There were also cases in which domestic startups developing the technology were recognized for their value of 3 trillion won. Amid the rapid commercialization of low-power AI semiconductors, competition for preoccupying the global market is also expected to become fiercer.<\/p>\n

The global on-device AI semiconductor market is expected to grow at an annual average of 20% from $47.2 billion (about 67 trillion won) this year to $105.7 billion (about 150 trillion won) in 2030, according to data analysis by global market researchers Omdia and Gartner.<\/p>\n

This is why NPU, an on-device AI semiconductor, is attracting attention. NPU is a semiconductor specialized in AI operation, and has higher power efficiency and less heat generation than conventional graphic processing units (GPUs). It is evaluated that it is most suitable for implementing on-device AI. It is easy to mount on various devices due to low price and low power consumption.<\/p>\n

Among domestic NPU companies, DeepX is attracting market attention. It is a domestic AI semiconductor fabless company that develops NPU for AI and has recently been recognized for its corporate value of $2.2 billion (about 3.135 trillion won) in Series D investment worth 370 billion won. In the process, DeepX received 42 billion won from private equity funds and asset management companies on the 30th of last month in a convertible repayment preferred stock (RCPS) method through a third-party allocation paid-in capital increase.<\/p>\n

It is seeking to sign a second investment contract this month, and has completed final deliberations on investments worth about 170 billion won, and major domestic financial holding-affiliated investment institutions, venture capital, and strategic investors (SI) will participate in follow-up investments.<\/p>\n

The company plans to expand the mass production and supply of products with the funds raised, while using the next-generation NPU to research and develop (R&D). It also plans to expand its global distribution and sales network by expanding its business organizations in the United States, Japan, Europe, China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. DeepX has secured purchase orders from customers in more than 10 countries.<\/p>\n

“We will focus on mass production and research and development of next-generation AI semiconductors, global supply chains, local business organizations, and customer technology support capabilities to attract this investment as the basis for DeepX to realize large-scale commercialization in the global market,” said Kim Nok-won, CEO of DeepX.<\/p>\n

As another domestic NPU company, Mobileint is also advancing AI semiconductor technology and expanding its business to the global market.<\/p>\n

Mobileint’s core technologies are high-performance edge AI semiconductors and ultra-low power on-device AI SoC (System-on-Chip). In particular, Mobileint’s AI SoC is a system semiconductor in which NPU and CPU are integrated into one chip and run without a separate server.<\/p>\n

Mobilint is proving its technological prowess by cooperating with major companies such as POSCO, Lotte Innovate, and Intellivix. In April, it attracted 70 billion won worth of Series C investment.<\/p>\n

Revelion and Puriosa AI, which have been focusing on AI semiconductors for data centers, are also speeding up their efforts to tap into the on-device AI market.<\/p>\n

Revelion is building up its performance by expanding its supply contract with NPU. Revelion recently supplied domestic NPU to government projects that apply AI analysis functions to public closed circuit (CC) TVs. It operates by first recognizing objects from cameras or edge equipment in public AI CCTV and then precisely analyzing images on servers.<\/p>\n

Puriosa AI has also completed semiconductor design for physical AI such as robots, autonomous vehicles, and smart factories and is preparing to launch them.<\/p>\n
