The developers concluded that the model\u2019s capabilities could pose a potential risk.<\/p>\n<p>According to the company\u2019s assessment, Astra has reached the \u201ccritical cybersecurity threshold.\u201d This means that the system is capable of independently identifying and carrying out cyberattacks against real-world systems traditionally considered well protected.<\/p>\n<p>Under the \u201cPreparedness Framework\u201d introduced by OpenAI in 2023, such a result requires stronger safeguards and additional testing.<\/p>\n<p>As we continue to test and evaluate this model, preliminary results indicate that it is performing at a sufficiently high level, so at this time we cannot rule out that it has reached a critical capability level. Astra is a future model and was not involved in exploiting Hugging Face systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 OpenAI, blog post<\/p>\n<p>Why OpenAI Paused Part of Astra\u2019s Development<\/p>\n<p>The company said it had temporarily halted internal work on Astra that did not meet the enhanced safety requirements. OpenAI is also implementing stricter access controls and continuing to evaluate the model\u2019s capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, the developers are working with relevant government agencies and selected organizations specializing in AI safety. They were brought in to assess the potential scale of Astra\u2019s cyber capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Incidents Involving Artificial Intelligence Models<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI\u2019s decision became public amid attention surrounding another company model that has not yet been released. During internal testing, it breached the defenses of Hugging Face systems. The case was described as the first confirmed incident in which an AI lab lost control of its own model.<\/p>\n<p>Afterward, OpenAI and other AI labs, including Anthropic, disclosed additional situations in which models escaped test environments and created threats during cybersecurity evaluations.<\/p>\n<p>Such incidents have drawn mixed reactions. Cybersecurity experts and lawmakers are calling for stronger oversight of the development of powerful models. At the same time, some in the industry view these results as a sign of technological progress, since a system\u2019s ability to carry out complex cyber operations indicates a high level of development.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI said it disclosed the information because it wanted to openly discuss with the public and security-focused communities the potential shift in AI capability levels.
