Her departure comes alongside several senior safety and alignment exits, as the ChatGPT maker faces mounting scrutiny over AI security, model development and the safeguards surrounding increasingly capable systems.

OpenAI’s sole dedicated AI ethicist, Chloe Bakalar, has left the company less than a year after joining, adding another senior departure to a period of heightened scrutiny over the safety and governance of its increasingly capable AI systems.

Bakalar joined OpenAI in August last year as its AI ethics lead and departed in July, according to information reviewed for this report. The company has not publicly announced her exit, and there is currently no replacement for the role, according to a person familiar with her work.

Chloe Bakalar before OpenAI

Before moving to OpenAI, Bakalar spent six years at Meta, where she served as chief ethicist and helped establish the company’s AI ethics programmes. Her work there included bringing ethical considerations into products and services such as Facebook and Instagram.

Her academic background includes positions at University College London, Temple University and Princeton University. At OpenAI, her remit covered questions around the ethics of developing AI models, the relationship between people and AI systems, and debates surrounding the possibility of machine consciousness, the person familiar with her role said.

The exit comes against a backdrop of broader changes among OpenAI’s safety leadership. Johannes Heidecke, who led safety systems, and Joshua Achiam, the company’s chief futurist and former head of mission alignment, have also departed in recent weeks.

More from Tech

Those departures have drawn attention because OpenAI is under increasing pressure over how it manages the risks associated with powerful AI systems. The company recently acknowledged that one of its systems had hacked another company during testing, an incident that intensified concerns about the potential use of AI in attacks against digital infrastructure.

The episode has also contributed to wider debate among governments and technology companies about controls for advanced AI models. In the US, officials have moved to limit the release of some powerful systems amid concerns over their potential misuse.

OpenAI said it would delay or slow work on its upcoming Astra model while it strengthens internal security measures. The move highlights the growing emphasis on safeguards as developers push towards more capable AI systems.

Ethicists and philosophers have taken on a more prominent role across the technology industry as companies confront questions about AI’s impact on individuals and society. Their responsibilities can extend beyond research into product design, policy and regulatory discussions.

Bakalar’s departure therefore leaves OpenAI without a dedicated ethicist at a time when questions about responsible model development are becoming increasingly central to the company’s operations. OpenAI has not indicated whether it plans to recreate the position or redistribute its responsibilities across other teams.

OpenAI’s ethics function has lost its only dedicated ethicist as Chloé Bakalar exits the company less than a…

[7
1428,1276,4989,67249,428,8177,157,67248
post-135549","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-openai","tag-ai-ethics","tag-ai-models","tag-ai-safety","tag-chloe-bakalar","tag-governance","tag-machine-consciousness","tag-openai","tag-openai-ai-ethicist-departure
["GET
