That includes how Iran has used attacks and threats to control the flow of traffic through the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/strait-of-hormuz-shipping-oil-disruptions-2a8abe58648abd2d9c4785b4130bee0c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a> and maintain a stranglehold on <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-israel-war-global-economy-oil-1bcb0c616c5ca2e1b6a903c2cd64a4e4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the world\u2019s economy<\/a>. A <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-israel-trump-lebanon-april-8-2026-38d75d5e4f1c7339a1456fc99415bb2a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ceasefire raised hopes Wednesday<\/a> of halting hostilities, but many issues remained unresolved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThis is a propaganda war for them,\u201d Neil Lavie-Driver, an AI researcher at the University of Cambridge, said, referring to Iran. \u201cTheir goal is to sow enough discontent with the conflict as to eventually force the West to cave in, so it is massively important to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">It&#8217;s not the first time memes have been used in a conflict, and they have evolved to include AI images in recent years. <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-technology-europe-media-social-media-123c7975a879b89b85c06877f1f12908\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI imagery bombarded Ukrainians<\/a> after the Russian invasion in 2022. Last year, the term \u201cAI slop\u201d became widely used to describe the glut of imperfect images posted online during the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-iran-war-nuclear-talks-geneva-news-06-21-2025-a7b0cdaba28b5817467ccf712d214579\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel-Iran war<\/a> to try to destroy the country\u2019s nuclear program. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In the conflict that began Feb. 28 with joint U.S.-Israel strikes, the memes have used well-honed cartoons that lambast U.S. officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The memes are fluent not just in English but in American culture and trolling. Published on various social platforms, they are racking up millions of views \u2014 though it\u2019s not clear how much influence they have had.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">They have portrayed U.S. President Donald Trump as old, out of step and <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-iran-war-go-it-alone-approach-c5f6cba859417ad1a6997b422a6f9d43\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">internationally isolated<\/a>. They have referenced bruising on the back of Trump&#8217;s right hand that prompted <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-health-mri-ct-scan-b453fdc14c4b130b95b37a13662772fd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">speculation about his health<\/a>; infighting in Trump&#8217;s MAGA base; and U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hegseth-hearing-senate-defense-pentagon-trump-37d0961eb63d824cae8d4478cb12e412\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hegseth\u2019s fiery confirmation hearing<\/a>, among other things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThey\u2019re using popular culture against the No. 1 pop culture country, the United States,\u201d said Nancy Snow, a scholar who has written more than a dozen books on propaganda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The pro-Iran images circulating online include a series that uses the style of the \u201cLego\u201d animated movies. In one, an Iranian military commander raps, \u201cYou thought you ran the globe, sitting on your throne. Now we turning every base into a bed of stone,\u201d as Trump falls into a bullseye built of <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jeffrey-epstein-files-pam-bondi-trump-1a6af3e9fa1cfb6d267985a971a4929a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cEpstein files,\u201d<\/a> the U.S. government\u2019s investigative records on disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The animations show levels of sophistication and internet access that indicate ties to government offices, said Mahsa Alimardani, a director of WITNESS, a human-rights group working on AI video evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cIf you\u2019re able to have the bandwidth needed to generate content like that and upload it, you are officially or unofficially cooperating with the regime,\u201d she said \u2014 pointing to severe restrictions <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-social-media-creators-internet-blackout-453f61788f68650cd72373a1c548e165\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran has imposed on the internet<\/a> as part of a crackdown on nationwide protests earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">State media has reposted some of the memes, including some from the account behind the \u201cLego\u201d-style videos, Akhbar Enfejari, which means Explosive News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Akhbar Enfejari described themselves as Iranians producing and uploading from within Iran in an effort to disrupt decades-long dominance of Western control of the airwaves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThey\u2019ve long dominated the media landscape and, through that power, imposed narratives on many nations,\u201d the group told The Associated Press on the messaging app Telegram. \u201cBut this time, something feels different. This time, we\u2019ve disrupted the game. This time, we\u2019re doing it better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">After the ceasefire was announced, Akhbar Enfejari posted: \u201cIRAN WON! The way to crush imperialism has been shown to the world. Trump Surrendered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In addition to the memes coming from pro-Iran groups, Iranian government accounts have trolled the U.S., including in a post Wednesday from Iran&#8217;s Embassy in South Africa that said, \u201cSay hello to the new world superpower,\u201d with a picture of the Iranian flag. Both the U.S. and Iran declared victory after agreeing to a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Analysts say the deep grasp of U.S. politics and culture is the fruit of more old-school methods of propaganda: a decades-long Iranian government program to promote narratives against the U.S. and Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThis meme war comes from institutions that are very aware what the American public is aware of and pop cultural references that can appeal to them,\u201d Alimardani said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Analysts say the U.S. and Israel do not appear to be engaging in the same kind of campaign \u2014 and given the restrictions Iran has put on internet access in the country, getting such messages to ordinary Iranians would be difficult. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Early in the war, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a video that used AI to make it seem like he was speaking in Farsi, in which he urged Iranians to overthrow their government.
