Bernstein analyst Mark Moerdler raised his price target on the software giant to $660 from $647 on Monday, reiterating an Outperform rating and telling clients that the company is executing a disciplined capacity build-out rather than a reckless spending spree.

The new target implies roughly 32% upside from Friday’s close of $499.99. Moerdler, ranked 527 out of more than 12,000 analysts tracked by TipRanks, argued that “the setup for the stock is really strong,” pushing back forcefully against a key component of the bear case that has dogged Microsoft (MSFT) shares.

“Simply stated, Microsoft is not building too fast, but rather taking a surprisingly measured approach given the demand signals they are receiving and their ability to easily pivot facilities to meet demand (CPU or GPU),” Moerdler wrote.

Investor anxiety has centered on whether Microsoft and its Big Tech peers are pouring too much capital into AI infrastructure without clear visibility on future returns. Those concerns were not fully resolved by the company’s fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 earnings beat, Moerdler acknowledged. But his analysis suggests the fears are overblown.

Bernstein’s work indicates Microsoft has added data center square footage at a slower pace than its cloud revenue has grown. While the company has increased future lease obligations, those commitments are spread across so many years that capacity growth should remain at a benign rate. Furthermore, Microsoft holds purchase obligations — mostly for power, cooling and hardware — for the next 12 months but has “almost nothing beyond that.”

Even in a scenario where AI demand stalls, Bernstein argued that future capacity could be redirected to support Microsoft’s existing CPU-based cloud business. “With future data center capacity growth roughly in line with the historical growth of its cloud business, Microsoft is not overbuilding datacenters,” the note stated.

The bullish call comes as Microsoft rides a three-day winning streak, adding approximately $67.42 billion in market capitalization over that stretch. The stock has surged 32.19% over the past month, dramatically outpacing the S&P 500’s 2.46% gain. However, the rally has pushed the 14-day relative strength index to 79.67, a level typically viewed as overbought.

Moerdler’s conviction carries weight. The five-star analyst boasts a 71% overall success rate and an average return of 15.20% on his ratings. His track record on Microsoft is even sharper — an 86% success rate with an average return of 26.12%.

The broader analyst community remains firmly in Microsoft’s corner. The stock holds a Strong Buy consensus rating, with 34 Buys and a single Hold assigned over the past three months. The average price target of $560.13 suggests roughly 10% upside from current levels, though Moerdler’s $660 call is considerably more aggressive.

Not everyone is convinced. Aswath Damodaran, the New York University finance professor known as the “Dean of Valuation,” warned in a Friday note that Microsoft, along with Amazon, Meta and Google, is “collectively overinvesting” in AI. Damodaran likened the spending to gambling rather than investing, arguing the companies are placing massive bets without a clear business model.

Bernstein directly addressed that skepticism. Moerdler told investors that while the latest quarter eased fears only incrementally, the underlying data tells a story of restraint. The firm noted that Microsoft can pivot facilities between CPU and GPU workloads with relative ease, giving management flexibility that pure-play AI infrastructure builders lack.

With capacity coming online quickly and hardware generally available as needed, Bernstein sees a company that is scaling intelligently rather than chasing hype. For investors willing to look through the noise, Moerdler’s message is clear: the AI build-out is a measured response to genuine demand signals, not a speculative bubble waiting to burst.

Wall Street is doubling down on Microsoft’s artificial intelligence strategy.
