The NVIDIA H200-powered computing platform will help scientists uncover hidden patterns in vast genomic, clinical and molecular datasets that could advance precision medicine. Yan Guo, Ph.D., professor in the Miller School’s Department of Public Health Sciences and director of the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource at Sylvester, secured the award and will lead acquisition and implementation of the system for researchers across the university.

Meeting the Demands of Data-Driven Science

Biomedical research now generates staggering amounts of data from genomic sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, medical imaging and electronic health records. Finding clues that can improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment requires systems capable of processing billions of data points quickly and accurately.

The new platform will support large-scale artificial intelligence and machine learning applications, helping investigators integrate biological information and analyze datasets beyond the limits of conventional computing.

Dr. Yan Guo is using AI to analyze genomic, clinical and molecular datasets.

“Artificial intelligence is transforming how we conduct biomedical research, but innovation depends on access to the right infrastructure. This new platform will give our investigators the computing power they need to analyze complex datasets, develop more sophisticated models and pursue questions that were previously beyond our reach,” Dr. Guo said.

Advancing Research Across Disciplines

The system will support far more than a single project or laboratory. Researchers in cancer biology, computational oncology, epidemiology, biostatistics, neuroscience, pathology, surgery and radiation oncology will use the shared platform to discover biomarkers, understand gene regulation, predict disease behavior and identify therapeutic opportunities more efficiently.

As director of Sylvester’s Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource, Dr. Guo focuses on bioinformatics, multiomics integration and AI-enabled discovery. The new infrastructure will expand those capabilities across the institution.

“The most exciting aspect of this award is that it supports an entire research community. Investigators across the university will be able to leverage this resource to generate insights faster, collaborate more effectively and translate discoveries into meaningful advances for patients,” Dr. Guo said.

Fueling the Future of Precision Medicine

Artificial intelligence is giving researchers new ways to identify relationships across complex datasets and uncover insights that could improve diagnosis, treatment and patient outcomes.

At Sylvester, researchers already use AI-driven approaches to study methylation patterns, spatial transcriptomics, gene expression and other complex biological systems. The new platform will provide the power needed to expand those efforts.

The investment aligns with Sylvester’s mission to drive patient-focused research through precision medicine, data science and collaboration. As South Florida’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, Sylvester continues to invest in technologies that help move discoveries closer to patients.

Building Infrastructure for Future Breakthroughs

Unlike grants that support a single study, the NIH High-End Instrumentation Grant Program funds resources that enable entire research communities. The award will create shared infrastructure for multiple investigators and programs across the University of Miami.

The award reflects a growing shift in biomedical science, where access to advanced computing infrastructure has become as critical as access to laboratory equipment.

“We are entering an era in which artificial intelligence will play a central role in scientific discovery. This investment positions the University of Miami to remain at the forefront of that transformation and ensures our researchers have the tools they need to tackle some of the most challenging problems in cancer and human health,” Dr. Guo said.

For UM researchers, the new system is a new engine for discovery, helping scientists transform data into insights that could improve human health.

More from the Miller School of Medicine

Tags: AI, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource, precision medicine, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, technology

By: Staff Writer | August 11, 2026 | 7 min. read | Share Summary The NIH awarded the University…

[2
24,25,15874,67419,360,67420,134
post-135908","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ai","tag-ai","tag-artificial-intelligence","tag-bioinformatics","tag-biostatistics-and-bioinformatics-shared-resource","tag-precision-medicine","tag-sylvester-comprehensive-cancer-center","tag-technology
["GET
