(KCTV) &#8211; Just two days before students return to class, the Shawnee Mission School Board has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kctv5.com\/2026\/08\/10\/shawnee-mission-school-district-shifts-stance-classroom-ai-ahead-first-school-day\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.kctv5.com\/2026\/08\/10\/shawnee-mission-school-district-shifts-stance-classroom-ai-ahead-first-school-day\/\">reversed course on a potential classroom ban of artificial intelligence<\/a>, opting instead to allow older students limited, teacher-guided access.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The board\u2019s decision Monday night, August 10, marks a sharp turn from discussions in July, when district leadership heavily favored a total ban on generative AI across all district-issued devices. Under the newly unveiled classroom technology plan, middle and high school students will be permitted to use built-in AI tools on district devices, but only under direct teacher supervision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Strict limits will remain in place for younger grades. To guide teachers, the district will implement a research-based technology integration framework called <a href=\"https:\/\/edtechbooks.org\/encyclopedia\/picrat\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/edtechbooks.org\/encyclopedia\/picrat\">PICRAT<\/a> this fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe need to find some balance in what technology can do for our kids and for our classroom teachers and what maybe needs to be reined in a little bit,\u201d Superintendent Dr. Mike Schumacher said. \u201cSo we\u2019re going to take our time, and we\u2019re going to do it right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The pivot drew immediate skepticism from some parents at the meeting, held at the Center for Academic Achievement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cStop conceding control of curriculum decisions and professional development to the IT department,\u201d one parent told the board. Another added that \u201cdecisions with the potential to fundamentally change how children learn deserve independent evidence, not just claims from organizations promoting their product.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">To address community concerns, the district announced plans to form a community workgroup, giving families a voice before a permanent, broader AI policy is finalized.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">In the meantime, the district is cracking down on misuse. Updated student handbooks for middle and high schools now explicitly ban using AI to cheat, introducing strict penalties including parent notification and the loss of assignment or course credit.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 KCTV.
