Claude watermarks begin Aug. 2<\/p>\n

Anthropic wrote that \u201cModels launched in the EU on or after Aug. 2, 2026 will support watermarking at launch,\u201d and that generated text will have embedded watermarks while generated files will include \u201cdigitally signed provenance metadata where supported.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company said the watermarking will not be limited to Europe, stating the watermarks will appear wherever Claude is offered, worldwide, even as it warned that some platforms or features may not support certain watermarking types.<\/p>\n

For text files, Anthropic said the watermark will be \u201cpart of the text\u201d and it will \u201ctravel with the text when it’s copied and pasted elsewhere,\u201d while for images and other files it will use the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) open standard.<\/p>\n

Anthropic also said it is working to add watermarking support to existing Claude models launched before Aug. 2, 2026, while warning that watermarking won\u2019t be foolproof. <\/p>\n

Model-level, copy-paste persistence<\/p>\n

TechCrunch\u2019s framing, as quoted in WeRSM, emphasizes that Anthropic is making the signal part of the model output itself, with Anthropic saying the watermark is embedded in the generated language and is designed for portability.<\/p>\n

WeRSM reports Anthropic\u2019s claim that \u201cthe watermark will travel when users copy and paste the text elsewhere,\u201d and it adds that it \u201cmay persist through some editing.\u201d<\/p>\n

PCWorld similarly says Anthropic will \u201cweaves an imperceptible watermark into the text itself,\u201d and that the mark will remain present after the text is copied and pasted or even after \u201csome\u201d editing.<\/p>\n

Anthropic also said it will attach provenance metadata to certain files it creates, including SVG, PNG, and JPG, and it plans to release tools so anyone can detect the watermarks, with details slated to arrive in \u201cforthcoming\u201d announcements.<\/p>\n

PCWorld notes Anthropic\u2019s caveat that the presence of a Claude watermark doesn\u2019t necessarily mean the content was originally created by Claude, because human-written text later edited by Claude would also get a watermark. <\/p>\n

Limits, detection tools, and compliance<\/p>\n

The Verge reports Anthropic\u2019s support-page language that \u201cBecause the watermark is part of the text, it will travel with the text when it\u2019s copied and pasted elsewhere, and may persist through some editing,\u201d and it adds that \u201cWatermarking will be applied at the model level.\u201d<\/p>\n

Euronews describes the two techniques Anthropic uses, including an imperceptible pattern \u201cweaved in as an imperceptible watermark directly into the text itself\u201d and signed provenance metadata for supported files such as \u201c.svg, .png, or .jpg.\u201d<\/p>\n

Euronews also ties the timing to the EU AI Act, stating that \u201cThe transparency obligations under Article 50 took effect on 2 August 2026,\u201d and it reports that non-compliance can trigger fines of up to \u20ac15 million or 3% of total global annual turnover, whichever is higher.<\/p>\n
