Fears of a new industrial revolution in which artificial intelligence<\/a> replaces manual labour have yet to materialise in Southeast Asia \u2013 but white-collar workers should brace themselves.Nearly one in four workers in the region face generative AI (GenAI) disrupting or affecting their jobs, according to a July report by the International Labour Organization<\/a> (ILO).<\/p>\n

Clerical, administrative and professional positions are most at risk, according to the report. Manual trades, craft and agricultural work remain relatively insulated, with the effects of AI varying across the region based on economic development, digital infrastructure and labour policies.<\/p>\n

But being most \u201cexposed\u201d to GenAI did not mean that entire professions would be replaced \u2013 just that some could move up the value chain or evolve, analysts say.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur understanding of automation and its impact on jobs has become more nuanced than in the early forecasts surrounding the Fourth Industrial Revolution,\u201d said Phu Huynh, senior employment specialist at the ILO.<\/p>\n

GenAI exposure among craft and trades workers and skilled agricultural workers \u201cis generally low\u201d, he said.
