IBM (NYSE:IBM) announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI on August 13, 2026, aimed at bringing advanced artificial intelligence models and products into IBM Consulting’s enterprise AI delivery platform. The collaboration will target large-scale deployments across industries including financial services, government, telecommunications and retail, with GPT-5.6 among the OpenAI models being integrated. <\/p>\n

GPT-5.6 and OpenAI products join IBM Consulting Advantage <\/p>\n

Under the partnership, IBM plans to incorporate OpenAI’s frontier models, including GPT-5.6, alongside products such as Codex and ChatGPT Work into IBM Consulting Advantage, the company’s platform for delivering consulting services to enterprise clients. <\/p>\n

The collaboration is designed to help organisations modernise workflows across a range of business functions, including finance, procurement, customer operations and human resources. <\/p>\n

By combining OpenAI’s AI technology with IBM’s enterprise consulting capabilities, the companies are targeting organisations seeking to introduce generative AI into complex existing systems while addressing security, governance and operational requirements. <\/p>\n

IBM to create dedicated OpenAI Practice <\/p>\n

IBM will establish a dedicated OpenAI Practice comprising thousands of consultants and engineers trained through OpenAI Partner Network certifications. <\/p>\n

The company also plans to deploy specialised teams of forward-deployed engineers who will work directly with customers on implementing AI technology, particularly in regulated industries where security, compliance and governance requirements can make deployment more complex. <\/p>\n

“The challenge is not access to AI technologies \u2014 it’s integrating AI securely and at scale into complex enterprise environments and workflows,” said Andy Baldwin, Global Senior Vice President at IBM Consulting. <\/p>\n

The initiative is intended to provide businesses with both the technology and implementation expertise needed to move AI projects from experimentation into production environments. <\/p>\n

Partnership targets workflows, software and cybersecurity <\/p>\n

IBM and OpenAI plan to concentrate their collaboration across three primary areas. <\/p>\n

The first involves transforming legacy business processes into AI-ready workflows, allowing organisations to introduce automation and advanced AI capabilities into existing operations. <\/p>\n

A second area will focus on application modernisation and accelerating software development, including the use of OpenAI tools such as Codex to support developers and engineering teams. <\/p>\n

Cybersecurity will form the third pillar. The companies intend to expand their collaboration through the OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program alongside IBM Autonomous Security, with the aim of strengthening AI-supported security capabilities for enterprise customers. <\/p>\n

OpenAI and IBM target regulated enterprise deployments <\/p>\n

The partnership places particular emphasis on moving artificial intelligence into operational use across industries where regulatory and security requirements can create substantial barriers to adoption. <\/p>\n

Denise Dresser, Chief Revenue Officer at OpenAI, said the two companies are helping organisations deploy AI that is “secure, operational, and aligned with real business priorities.” <\/p>\n

The combination of IBM’s longstanding relationships with major enterprises and governments and OpenAI’s advanced models could provide the companies with opportunities to expand AI adoption across highly regulated environments. <\/p>\n

IBM to join OpenAI’s Elite partner tier <\/p>\n

As part of the agreement, IBM will become a member of OpenAI’s Elite partner tier, strengthening the formal relationship between the two companies. <\/p>\n

IBM and OpenAI also intend to jointly develop industry-specific AI solutions tailored to the requirements of individual sectors. <\/p>\n

IBM cautioned that statements concerning the future direction of the collaboration represent goals and objectives rather than firm commitments and could change over time. <\/p>\n

The partnership represents a significant expansion of IBM’s enterprise AI strategy, combining its consulting and implementation capabilities with OpenAI’s frontier models as businesses increasingly look to move generative AI from experimental projects into large-scale production deployments. <\/p>\n
