EPA/Yonhap

Google is folding part of DeepMind, the core hub of its artificial intelligence development, into its main corporate structure, according to reports. The move is read as an effort to restore the competitiveness of Gemini by curbing DeepMind’s autonomy, after assessments that Google has fallen behind OpenAI and Anthropic in the race to build AI models. Co-founder Sergey Brin, who has stepped back from day-to-day management, has gone so far as to press employees to catch up with rivals, taking an active role in the effort.

Google will bring some of DeepMind’s non-technical units under its main corporate structure, Reuters reported on the 12th. The company disclosed the plan at an all-staff meeting on the 6th — a day after it announced a leadership reshuffle in which Chief Scientist Jeff Dean departed and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis moved into a chairman role.

The reorganization is seen as a shift toward concentrating resources on restoring AI model competitiveness, in exchange for scaling back the autonomy Google had long guaranteed DeepMind. After acquiring the London-based DeepMind in 2014, Google kept the operation in place locally and allowed long-term research and various independent projects rather than pushing for commercial results. But with assessments that Gemini, its core AI model, has fallen behind rivals, analysts say a change to the existing approach has become unavoidable.

Google was seen as having caught up with the front-runners in the AI model race when it unveiled Gemini 3 last year, but it fell back into a chasing position as Anthropic and OpenAI rolled out new models one after another. According to Reuters, Google delayed the launch of its flagship model by about two months from its original plan after internal tests showed that the next-generation Gemini continued to lag rivals in some areas.

Changes are also emerging in DeepMind’s chain of command. Unlike Hassabis, who has long been based in London, the new head, Koray Kavukcuoglu, moved to Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, last year. Tasked with applying Gemini across Google’s various services, he will hold decision-making power over DeepMind’s key matters going forward.

Co-founder Brin has stepped in himself. At a town hall meeting attended by hundreds of employees in April, Brin urged DeepMind to speed up development, and in recent months he has repeatedly stressed to key staff that they must catch up with the most advanced AI models, according to reports. Despite holding no official executive title, he is exerting influence over model training and resource allocation, Reuters said.

Within Google, there is hope that the reshuffle will reduce some of the inefficiency in AI development. Critics have pointed to limited computing power and clashes among the heads of various projects as reasons Google has been slower than rivals to release models.

Inside DeepMind, however, some worry that the research organization’s autonomy could weaken further. Among some employees, there are concerns that the protective barrier that has shielded DeepMind’s research activities may be eroding further.

Google Gemini.
