{"id":139563,"date":"2026-08-14T02:09:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T02:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/139563\/"},"modified":"2026-08-14T02:09:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T02:09:11","slug":"uber-partners-with-chinas-pony-ai-for-2000-robotaxis-in-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/139563\/","title":{"rendered":"Uber partners with China&#8217;s Pony.ai for 2,000 robotaxis in Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Backed by Uber and powered by Chinese company Pony.ai, Croatia&#8217;s Verne has rolled out robotaxi services in the capital city Zagreb since spring 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Marko Perkov | Afp | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>BEIJING \u2014 U.S. ride-hailing giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/UBER\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Uber<\/a> is ramping up its global robotaxi coverage with operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/PONY\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pony.ai.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The companies plan to deploy 2,000 of Pony.ai&#8217;s self-driving taxis across Europe, and expand the robotaxi partnership to the Middle East, they announced Friday. <\/p>\n<p>In late March, Uber and Pony.ai launched a commercial robotaxi service in Croatia&#8217;s capital Zagreb \u2014 which they <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.uber.com\/news-events\/news\/press-release-details\/2026\/Verne-Pony-ai-and-Uber-Partner-to-Launch-Europes-First-Commercial-Robotaxi-Service\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">claim is the first in Europe<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The partnership announced Friday will roll out robotaxis to four other European cities. The companies did not name the cities or share an exact timeframe. <\/p>\n<p>Having a large-enough <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/01\/china-learns-to-build-without-nvidia.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vehicle fleet is<\/a> critical for commercialization. The more cars available, the more data can be collected to demonstrate safety to regulators and boost operational efficiency. Greater availability encourages more people to use the service.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GOOGL\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alphabet<\/a>-backed robotaxi operator Waymo is the global leader with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/28\/tesla-robotaxi-fleet-texas-one-tenth-size-of-waymos-filings-reveal.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fleet of around 5,000 vehicles<\/a>, primarily in the U.S. It is testing rides in London, and <a href=\"https:\/\/zagdaily.com\/connected\/waymo-registers-entities-in-france-the-netherlands-spain-and-germany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reportedly set up new entities in four major EU economies<\/a> in June.<\/p>\n<p>Waymo also has plans underway in Tokyo, and is engaging with officials around the world to &#8220;lay the groundwork for global operations,&#8221; it said in a statement to CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese rivals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/baidus-apollo-go-and-freenow-by-lyft-begin-road-testing-in-london-302836171.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Baidu Apollo Go<\/a> and WeRide, meanwhile, are ramping up plans and tests for operating autonomous rides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/22\/chinas-baidu-to-test-robotaxis-in-switzerland-in-race-for-europe.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in Europe<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Uber is part of many of their plans.<\/p>\n<p>WeRide and Uber in June announced <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.uber.com\/news-events\/news\/press-release-details\/2026\/WeRide-Uber-and-AVOMO-Bring-Robotaxis-to-Madrid\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">plans to launch Spain&#8217;s first robotaxi taxi<\/a> pilot in Madrid later this year.
